Renton Arena Clears Senate Committee

At long last, the Sonic arena funding package has cleared Sen. Margarita Prentice's Senate Ways & Means Committee; and Gov. Christine Gregoire is expected to hold a meeting of all legislative leaders very soon to gauge what sort of momentum is there for full passage. This is all lovely, but don't get out the confetti just yet, y'all. For starters, House leader Frank Chopp has been unwavering in his position that there are more important things for his chamber to deal with than big-dough sports arenas. Secondly, there are only a few more days left in the regular session (although Gregoire could call a subsequent special session specifically to deal with the arena issue). Thirdly, even if the measure gets out of Olympia, it will be automatically kicked to arena supporter Ron Sims and his King County Council to determine how to proceed. Word on the street is the Council wants to put it to a countywide vote, a long-shot proposition that Sims probably doesn't want to contend with. For those of you who think county government is increasingly irrelevant and boring, the fireworks that could result from a Sims v. Council showdown might make you think twice.
