Tip Your 40 (Years) to the Sonics' Memory
The Washington State Legislature, led by House "dictator" Frank Chopp, announced yesterday that the Sonics' desire to give King County the authority to continue existing taxes to finance a new arena in Renton would not be put to a vote this session, effectively guaranteeing that next season will be the Sonics' last in Seattle before the team heads south for the Dust Bowl. Surprisingly and admirably, Sen. Maria Cantwell's office attempted an 11th hour appeal to Chopp. "In the long run it's cheaper and easier to keep the team in the state than it is to bring in a team in 10 years from now when the ball rolls around again," Cantwell spokeswoman Katharine Lister told the Seattle Times.
Appealing to Chopp or seeking to oust him at the ballot box is worthless: He represents a safe district that couldn't care less about pro sports. Still, Olympia is a place where a secular form of Easter gets celebrated about every other year. Could it be that County Executive Ron Sims (on the record as firmly supporting the Events Center) and Cantwell, who employs Gregoire's daughter as her legislative director, are providing the Governor with a bit of political cover to call a special session specifically to force a full vote on the Sonics arena? Let's hope so. If you care about the Sonics -- or simply want to give King County the opportunity to control its own destiny -- call or e-mail Gregoire's office. Now.
