Observations & Frustrations From A Dawg Day Afternoon

pacino.jpg

We're certainly not alone in singing this chorus, but the way the Huskies lost yesterday's game (28-27) to the overrated BYU Cougars yesterday was sickening. In summary, Jake Locker scored a late-game touchdown, excitedly threw the ball in the air, and got a 15-yard penalty that turned a routine extra point into a blocked 35-yard field goal. Big fucking deal — if the refs wanted to punish the arrogance of celebration, they should have flagged the entire BYU team for that stupid dance they did in the visitor's end zone before the game. Which brings me to the first of a handful of points:

1. The fact that BYU, in its well-publicized quest for a perfect season and BCS bowl berth, left Husky Stadium with a narrow, controversial one-point win over a young, relatively crappy Husky squad is all the proof anyone should need that schools who roll through creampuff conferences should, in fact, be on the outside looking in come January.

2. I'll bet Ty Willingham is kicking himself right about now for not redshirting Chris Polk. It was only when Polk came out of the game that the Husky running game (not counting Jake Locker) started rolling, and I don't think that was coincidence. Freshman Polk, good as he one day may be, is in way over his head at present.

3. Maybe the fact that the Husky defense misses so many tackles has more to do with the players they recruited to make those tackles than who the defensive coordinator is.

4. Noon starts suck. Not enough time for the Dawg Pound to get sufficiently soused prior to kickoff. But I guess when you play a Mormon school, the shoe sort of fits.

5. In spite of that awful call, the best team actually won yesterday.

6. Jake Locker is a phenomenal athlete who is capable of changing games all by his lonesome. He also has good arm strength. What Jake Locker isn't, however, is a great passer. In fact, he's a pretty awful passer. True, his completion percentage has suffered from the vegetable oil his receiving corps has taken to rubbing on its hands before each series, but if I had a nickel for every time Locker has overthrown a wide open receiver in stride during the first year-and-change of his Husky career, I'd be able to buy Dawg dogs for the entire student section.

Agreed on all points. But BYU, while outplaying the Huskies, didn't deserve to win that way. They should have had to earn it in overtime, which, with the way the Husky D was playing, probably wouldn't have been a problem.

Agree they didn't deserve to win that way; no team does. But had the Huskies somehow pulled it out, I'd have felt pretty damn lucky given the total yard discrepancy and what not.
