Final Buzzer

The bad news: you will no longer find any new content on Buzzer Beater. The good news: All sports content that used to be found here will now be published on another, more general-interest SW blog, the Daily Weekly. So change your bookmarks accordingly, and thanks for your continued readership.

Gotterdammerung Comes to Husky Nation

I wasn't going to post this. But after so many of my, let's just call them "friends", who did not go to the University of Washington sent the infamous Hitler Husky YouTube clip to this Dawg fan, my resolve melted.

Viewing the clip for the eleventeenth time, the one thing that needs to be said is that during the Battle of Berlin, the Germans at least knew how to play defense...

(For the amateur historian types, and to cut off the Internet nitpickers, much of the Nazi defense of Berlin was actually led by SS Divisions comprised of Danish, Norwegian and French volunteers).

Extra: The Bunker scene in question comes from the excellent 2004 German movie "Downfall" or "Untergang" which is based on the memoirs of the Fuhrer's secretary, Traudl Junge. Other than "Das Boot", it is probably the best World War II flick told from the perspective of the badguys.

Variations of the video have gone officially viral for many moons now with dozens of imitators showing Hitler ranting about Twitter being down, Vista, getting banned from World of Warcraft, and having his car stolen. Apparently Adolf isn't a big fan of Ford Mustangs.

When Sir Mix-a-Lot Says You're Over, You Know You're in Trouble

After getting a taste of Erika's tookus, the sultan of bootie takes some time to tell the NYTimes that Seattle is sport Purgatory.

The front page of Yahoo's Fantasy Sports section features this curious caption:

Helping Women Understand Baseball

A pair of Seattle authors, Deidre Silva and Jackie Koney, are aspiring to do just that, with the release of this book. Ladies, there are only two ways to third base with a real man: balls and....balls. (Bah-dump-bump!)

Costas' Deadspin Debate

Categories: Sports Media

battlefieldearth.jpg

Both Deadspin founder Will Leitch and "Friday Night Lights" author Buzz Bissinger make some very good points in this Costas segment on the impact of blogs on sports media. And I love Deadspin and a lot of armchair quarterback sports blogs (basketbawful being my fave), just as I love "Friday Night Lights." But you know what I don't love? Bissinger's condescending, dad-knows-best tone in this segment. He comes off like an absolute fucking prick (plus, to write what Deadspin might write, he looks like Travolta's character from "Battlefield Earth"). And what's Bissinger done that's been worth a damn since "Friday Night Lights," anyway? He got unfiltered access for "Prayer for the City" and "3 Nights in August," and those books were both shit. Why? Because he got way too cozy with his subjects (especially LaRussa, who essentially co-authored the Cardinal tome), which is exactly Leitch's point when he criticizes the sort of access the Bissingers of the world get as a double-edged sword. There's a happy medium here, fellas, but Bissinger certainly doesn't achieve it, whereas Leitch cops to not even trying -- a far more noble place to be, in my opinion.
