36 Hours of Smooth

During the day-and-a-half, give or take a day, it took me to compose this week's shocking Weekly cover story, Greg Nickels' Quiet Storm, I listened to Seattle's premiere smooth jazz station, KWJZ, the entire time. Here are some of the lessons learned from that experience. One, all smooth jazz is not elevator music, but all elevator music is smooth jazz. Two, Ray Parker Jr., the guy who sang the theme from Ghostbusters, is a smooth jazz superstar for his instrumental work, not his pipes. Three, smooth jazz isn't just a musical genre, it's a way of life. There are smooth jazz cruises, getaways, cocktail hours, what have you. If you were a fan of the series Dynasty, check 'em out. And four and foremost, if I were a detainee in Guantanamo Bay and U.S. interrogators wanted to get me to spill some sort of terrorizing beans, all they'd have to do is put Spyro Gyra, Kenny G or Manhattan Tranfer on repeat, for about 45 minutes, before I sang like a motherfucker.
