Murrows All Around

It's in a way fitting that local radio and TV stations today scored a number of Edward R. Murrow broadcasting awards, named for the famed reporter who grew up in Skagit County and schooled at what is now Washington State University. But, along with nine other awards the stations won in the past two years, the Murrows also indicate we're better served than most by the electronic media. Out of 13 awards given for broadcast excellence in the country's largest TV markets, Seattle stations won three. KOMO won for Eric Johnson's feature reporting on Marin Morrison, a partially paralyzed teen swimmer with a brain tumor; KOMO also won for John Sharify's writing (and storytelling) and  KING (which got the overall excellence nod in 2006) won for best Website, king5.com. In big-market radio competition, KIRO AM won for best use of sound.
