The New York Times has a story today about Seattle's zero waste efforts, with all the experts saluting us for entering the new frontier: food scraps. (Cue Star Trek intro.)
Story makes citizens here seem like recycling superstars: "In Seattle, many residents take pride that their weekly non-recyclable output fits in a container no larger than the average countertop microwave."
Sounds like paradise. Truth is Seattle's recycling rate has been stagnant for about a decade, though we're still better than the national average and down right green compared to some of those East Coast burgs.
Mayor Greg Nickels tells the NYT he hopes we can recover from our recycling backslide. Nina Shapiro wrote a story last month about a trash man who would be more than happy to help.
