Fear, Loathing in Magnolia

It does seem like an epidemic, "30 homes and businesses burglarized in Magnolia the past few months," the P-I reports today — although the story later says there were 23 burglaries over four months, a pretty routine average of just over one a week (the story also says Windermere Real Estate's Magnolia office was "robbed" Monday by thieves who took a door off its hinges - which sounds a lot like a burglary, too).
Either way, the community is nervous, and watching. According to a neighborhood Web site, beware of Magnolia if you are a thief...or even if you're just soliciting for environmental causes, especially on American Idol night. A few excerpts from the mean streets:
—On 1/22, 8:30pm, we had a young white male with a green hooded sweatshirt knock on our door and ask if we would like to sign up for evironmental action support. He walks with a noticeable limp. It seemed really suspicious...I reported this to 911...—I saw the same guy around 8:15 yesterday (1/22) on 24th as I was coming home. He was walking away from the neighbor's house after she told him to go away. He didn't come over to us, though I called 911 to report his description and location, and then promptly set my alarm as well.
—We had a young black female come to our house tonight at 8:30 asking us to sign up for some enviromental support group too! I thought it was an odd time to be ringing door bells and we were in the middle of eating pizza and watching American Idol, so I said "no thank you" and shut the door quickly. My 10 year old proceeded to turn on our alarm immediately!
—Anyone visits my home I make sure I get phone number of Supervisor, name, company, address, hours of operation in neighborhood, any plans for future solicitations. Do the kids appear informed on the topic? Any material handouts? Take it all and walk them off your property and let them know about how bad the timing is of the visit considering the break-ins, let the Supervisor know. Why would the company continue solicitations? Hopefully these irresponsible fools are caught and punished.
—Last night 1/22/08 around 8:15 pm someone knocked on our door while we were watching American Idol. We weren't expecting anyone and didn't want to be disturbed so we didn't answer and they went away. I thought it was odd to have someone knock on our door at night time. I did not see the person. Today I get to work and my co-worker tells me about all the breakins in Magnolia...What do you think they are jotting down after the rest of you have opened up the door? Clues on how to break in?
—This is precisely why we all need to vote Republican. We need to be able to defend ourselves. The barbarians are at the gates people.

I live in Magnolia - among these silly white folk - in part because it was, and is, the safest place in town!

A couple quick points since you may underestimate what it is currently like to be dealing with this first hand...
Police have told the Magnolia community it was roughly 25+ break-ins, since December 1 - if the average damage and theft toll is anywher near our personal amout, that means that there has been over 380,000 dollars worth of crime in Magnolia not including car prowls since December 1.
The individuals are working in a team and have tried to gain entrance into occupied houses including those with children.
The implications of the theft of personal identification (through the theft of our password protected laptop) goes far beyond the initial crime and required around 12 hours of work to patch up the broken doors and windows, try to salvage the inside of our house and, lock down our credit, protect bank and credit card accounts etc.
Granted there have been interesting posts but with regard to the last comment you posted - why did you not print the community reponses to that post, or would that add a little ballance to your blog.
There are a lot of good people working hard to get the word out about some potentially dangerious people who may not only committing crime in Magnolia, but who may also be preying on other neiborhoods in Seattle.
Best Regards
