Damn It Feels Good To Be An Incumbent
Posted Aug. 20 at 12:31 am by Don WardSo much for all of that twaddle about voters wanting “change”. So much for the "Top Two" primary system eroding the power of party elites.
Because almost every single incumbent candidate running for office “won” their primary race, garnering more votes than their competitors. For the most part they won heap big.
In all the congressional races, incumbents are ahead. In all the major judicial races, incumbents are ahead. In all but one of the state-wide races, incumbents are ahead. And in all but two of the state legislative races, incumbents are ahead.
The only anomaly to the trend is Democratic State Treasurer Jim McIntire who is behind Republican Allan Martin, 40.6 to 44.4 percent. But Jimmy Mac also drew a Democrat challenger.
Update: Jim McIntire is not the incumbent. That well-known title belongs to Michael J. Murphy. Will try not to work from memory in the future. Although that does leave Dunn as the only incumbent gangsta out looking for work.
Sen. Mike Carrell, from Dupont’s 28th LD is essentially tied with Debi Srail as of this writing. A handful of other Republican incumbents are a few percentage points ahead of the competition: Sen. Don Benton (17th LD), Rep. Glenn Anderson (5th LD), Rep. John Ahern (6th LD).
The only incumbent that will not be making an appearance in November, because of the Top 2 primary, is Republican Jim Dunn, a representative from the 17th LD. Dunn was was striped politically last session and then stripped of committee assignments after he made inappropriate remarks to a female aide in Olympia.
Looks like we need another primary system in order to throw the bums out...

Incumbent Rob McKenna is slightly behind... which is ridiculous considering the amazing job he's been doing as our Attorney General. Democrats seem determined to vote against anyone with an R in their name.

He is a state legislator (who some say lost his position as Chair of the House Committee on Finance because he was promoting an income tax) not seeking re-election because he sought the nomination for Treasurer instead. Allan Martin is the current Assistant State Treasurer. The other candidate in the Democrat primary race was Chang Mook Sohn, former Executive Director of the state's Economic and Revenue Forecast Council.
