Post-Prison Program Nearly Closes

A few weeks ago, Ari Kohn sent out an e-mail announcing that he was closing the Post-Prison Education Program as of August 22nd. The unique program, funded by Kohn and his octogenarian mother, sent former prisoners to college. (See this story from April.) But his mother finally retired from her insurance job and, according to Kohn, they had no money left to keep the program afloat. “I am utterly and completely devastated,” he wrote in the e-mail. Since then, however, Fox News has aired a piece on the program and conversations with legislators, particularly Sen. Adam Kline (D-Seattle), have left him hopeful that he may yet win funding from Olympia as well as a small grant. “The situation could not possibly be more fluid,” he writes in an e-mail today. For the moment, the program is accepting no new applicants.
