The Seattle U.S. Attorney's Office today announced the government is launching a probe into the collapse of Washington Mutual. The AP reports:

U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan issued a statement Wednesday saying the FBI, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the IRS and the Securities and Exchange Commission have created a task force to look into the thrift's failure. He asked anyone with information to contact authorities through a tip line, or to email the FBI's Seattle office.

It's one of an expected barrage of probes and lawsuit predicted following WaMu's failure and sale. San Diego's city attorney, for one, has already filed suit against WaMu alleging the bank engaged in unlawful subprime mortgage lending practices.
