What Really Happened at the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards

rawk.jpeg
Krist Novoselic blogs every Tuesday on the Daily Weekly.

Seeing as this is the one-year anniversary of my column for SeattleWeekly.com, I thought I’d do something different this week and tell the whole story behind the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards when my bass came crashing down on my head.

Nirvana showed up for the production of the awards show early in the day at UCLA, west of Hollywood. The show was in the sports arena, and there were mobile houses set up for the performers off an athletic field.

We settled into our trailer. In the music world, you show up on time only to wait around a lot. Why not have a beer to take the edge off? Instead of a cold, sudsy treat, I found cans of warm cheap beer. Arg! Might as well let it cool down in the mini-fridge for a while.

I walked around and checked out the stage area. Other bands were showing up. I said hello to the fellows in Pearl Jam and the Black Crowes. Sammy Hagar said hi. There was Howard Stern in a suit made to let his bare buttocks hang out.

I eventually made it to the food service area, where Kurt and Courtney were at a table with their newborn daughter, Frances. They told me that Axl Rose had walked by and Courtney started teasing him. She yelled, “Axl, Axl—you’re the godfather!” Upon hearing this, Axl apparently got very annoyed, walked over to Kurt, and demanded that he keep his woman in line. Kurt turned to Courtney and sarcastically asked his woman to keep in line and left it at that. Axl then split. Of course, Kurt and Courtney were musing over Axl’s response in the context of society’s patriarchal tendencies. My thought was that Rose shouldn’t have gotten bent out of shape. He should have walked over and asked to kiss the baby or something!

At the same time, Kurt wanted to play the tune “Rape Me” and was adamant about it. The MTV people were upset. We were being asked from all corners not to. I thought we should play something off Nevermind, do the gig, and leave. Easy, right? No. Kurt was very stubborn and refused to play another tune. There was quite a swirl around this issue.

I went back to the trailer and had a still-warm beer. Yuk, but I drank it anyway. To resolve the song controversy, we said we were going to do “Lithium,” but we decided among the band to pull a prank and play a few chords of “Rape Me” at the beginning. Even though the issue was resolved, the back and forth between their people, our people, us and them, or whoever—it was draining.

I was walking toward the stage and came across my now-friend and colleague, Duff McKagan. I think Duff was also under the influence. He must have heard something from Rose and had a terse word for me. I was already a little bent out of shape and instantly replied with the same sentiment. The production people grabbed me and we continued toward the stage.

I was now even more shook up. One should take the stage in a good frame of mind, but I wasn’t there. Nirvana gets introduced, and we start playing our prank, then switch into “Lithium.” I’m plugged into some awful bass rig that’s distorting terribly. I can barely hear what I’m playing, and the tone deteriorates into an inaudible mess. Fuck it—time for the bass-toss schtick. Up it goes!!!!! I always try to get good air—I bet I hit over 25 feet, easy! But no matter how high it went, I was not on my game— the only time I’ve ever dropped it was then in front of 300 million people. Ouch! I was fine, but I faked like I was knocked out, perhaps expressing my inner torment over a taxing evening. (Maybe I was just embarrassed.)

I stumbled offstage toward the green room with my hands on my forehead. I walked straight into the bathroom and looked at a bloody forehead in the mirror. I washed my face off and put a paper towel to my head. Paramedics came in and put a little bandage on, then handed me a long medical release form to sign. Standing behind them was Brian May, the guitarist of Queen, with a glass of chilled champagne. I signed the release just to get the medics away from me so I could take a sip of Mr. May’s wonderful medicine. Ahh, yes!!! Moments later Dave Grohl burst in. He’d been looking all over for me, only to find me enjoying a calm glass of bubbly with Mr. May. It was a relief for all!

I met Duff properly in the late 1990’s. And it was a nice exchange—considering we had met quite improperly in 1992. I’ve had a great year here at the Weekly. One of my best days was when I unexpectedly came across Duff’s new column—what a pleasant surprise!

I hope you like the story of that infamous moment in rock music. I still have that bass guitar, too. I don’t play it much. The neck is a little bent!!!

Krist man thats a great post. If you were embarssed at the time you certainly shouldn't of been! Trying to throw a bass live on TV in the middle of a songs pretty rock 'n roll! And you made the vmas a hell of alot better than they are these days.

Your man Dave Grohl has a pretty funny recollection of it too! Dennis Miller Interview: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=J2pgOsgLcn4

You forgot the best part, where Kurt kicks you in the ass!

I only have one question: Did the bass stay in tune?

Awesome story, Krist. Thanks so much for sharing. Nothing better than to get the facts straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

Will post @ NFC now :)

hahaha *fires up the video*

What I WOULD have loved to see? The expression of the MTV executive when Rape Me was played.

All I REALLY remember of the incident was Kim Warnick calling me the next day. She said that I had been an "asshole"! I groaned in embarrassment and humility as Kim has never lied to me and always has been straight up. Good article Krist and I am sorry for being an asshole to you that day...you guys were my favorite band at the time and I had worn out 2 cassettes of 'Nevermind'. Who would have thought that I'd be asking you for election advise 16(?!) years later?

Great, great story, Krist. This is probably one of the most remembered things in the VMA's history. And about the Axl Rose thing...I guess the only person involved that didn't spoke out concerning that episode is Courtney. Perhaps she will do it in the future. Oh, and I loved when you did the military salute after the band switched to play Lithium. It was really funny.

:)
Great Part of Music History :)

I'm not sure if Krist sees these messages, but i needed to ask him a question. His opinion is the only one i'll take as the "final word" on this...

Damn, it's great to hear from Krist again, whether it's music or written words :)

Wow, Krist! You look like you are about 17 in the photo above! Oh, the memories those VMA's have added to my poor recollections!

Peace dood,
Milo

1992? That was a good year I think..

english is normally the language us folks here in the states use to express ourselves. not sure what language you were attempting to use in your "post" but maybe you should lay off the drugs a bit or take a course in writing.

either way, this was my first and last time reading your garbage babble

I love that you posted this! If MTV had any credibility this would have made top 10 VMA award moments every time. To know that you survived and had champagne with Brian May makes it even better.

BTW, I lost Neil Hamburger's Drunken Spelling Bee recently on your name. Damn that 't'!

That's weird. This same exact story happened to me once, except Axl Rose punched Courtney in the vagina.

Loved the story but what about the part with the trailer?

Interesting Article. Thanks for the information.

Krist, I was forced to wait behind a couple of people standing on an escalator yesterday and I thought of you. I think I'm finally going to write that letter to my congressman. The time is now.

One of my favourite Nirvana stories. I also like the one where Kurt dressed as Barney for Halloween on stage and you filmed it I think? Would love to see that video!
But yeh what really happened with Axl afterwards? I loved it when Dave came to pick up the award and was just shouting "Hi Axl! Hi Alx! Where's Axl? Hi Axl!" hahaha!

This brought back some great memories, Krist. Thanks for the perspective. All I can hear is Dana Carvey's voice commenting on this awesome moment when it cut back to him on the podium.

You sound like someone who is fleshing out the some chapter in a book...maybe a book about your time (limited as it was) with NIRVANA!.

I was in my first year of high school when I heard Nevermind. Funny thing is that I don't remember the drummer's name and I didn't remember you until this article. I only remembered you by your freakishly long arms.

Good luck with the book.

Krist, you have no idea how much your band influenced me in becoming the person I am today (Actually, I'm sure you do because of the effect your band has had on millions). Just wanted to let you know that and how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post. Brought back memories and gave me chills just to read.

Every time I get on an escalator and I get stuck, I can only think of what you said. Testimony to human laziness.

Screw MTV! You guys should have played rape me and then tore the place apart. Alas, the show must always go on...

Best,
S

I have nothing to add to this discussion.

Interesting Article. Thanks for the information.

I had a dream where Nirvana was playing on a tiny stage at a fairground about 12" off the ground — and nobody was watching but me. I don't think any basses were thrown but man it kicked ass.

Anyway — thanks for un-sucking the 80's Krist...

cheers

krist, thanks for the memories. i crack up everytime i hear territorial pissings.

feel free to sue courtney for some more nirvana music.

corporate rock still sucks!

Thank God for you, sir! Watching you guys devote equal amounts of passion to playing great music and having fun doing changed my life. Corny, but true.

Hope all's well!

Nice story. Warm beer does that to me every time lol.

Awesome story! 1992 was a pretty good year for rock.

Thanks, its much better to hear your version of all of that than some biographer writing about someone they never knew or places they never were...Wish I could have been there! You rock Krist, and your a great writer too!!

Krist, all these years I imagined that you were on the edge of death after a near fatal encounter with a rapidly descending bass. But it's way better this way - ending with you and Brian May enjoying a glass of bubbly. It's really refreshing to hear this totally human, intimate and personal side to this infamous bit of rock history. Anyway, thanks for sharing and inspiring me to pick up a bass when I was 13 years old and learn all of your parts. I am still playing rock and roll today and I have you, Kurt and Dave to thank for it.

nice!

Anyways, i found this interesting site.

Why don't you check on it.

Krist, I saw you on a really remote beach in Cozumel about a month or so after the loss of Kurt. You were way out in the water by yourself (your friends were still on the beach at a table). I wanted to go out to you and say something, but thought I would be invading your space after what happened. It was a moving moment for me, seeing you staring out into the sea for a few minutes by yourself. Anyway, thought I'd share.

Nice story. Warm beer does that to me every time lol.

corporate rock still sucks!

keep playing accordion, chrissy! your friend in Altoona, PA

I loved that performace of Lithium. It was probably my favorite live performance of that song that ive heard. Kurt's voice was great. Are you in a band now?

You had some great bass lines, dude!

yo i was there that night and it was pretty scary. you went down on one knee almost immediately on impact and had to be helped off the stage.

funny how your most famous moment is a dorky one yet defining too. it's like the last wisp of the humorous side of nirvana... like you tried to lighten the moment and got hit on the head for your efforts.

rip kurt. rock on krist and dave!

john

rock on

That must of been a crazy experience pissing the pants off of them mtv head nachos....NIRVANA and The BEATLES forever!!!!!!!!

Haha so surreal, reading this and the duffmans subsequent reply. I heard the little Duff/Krist fracas was recorded, someone should leak that footage, it would probably make for some hilarious viewing seeing how we're all friends now :) As for the actual "gig", it maybe have come out of pretty difficult circumstances but thats probably my favorite Nirvana performance ever, it seriously rocked the f-out. Krist, I could tell you were faking, but the ad-lib falling over got a 10 from me anyway.

love you krist

I love you, Mr. Novoselic.

awesome story! always nice to hear it from the sorce! :)
Aviv, Israel.

I told you man..more Nirvana insight. Your replies are through the roof. Going back to the vinyl blog I am happy to say I am now the proud owner of the clear In Utero LP. It's never sounded fucking better.

Hey Krist, glad to hear this story from your prospective! I met you at Belfast when you played with Flipper, i shook your hand, told you my name (mark) and gave you my bands CD....then asked for a photograph! haha. I dont know if you remember me, but damn... that was a great night!
Hope you're well my friend, take care.
(ps. the photo's on my myspace)
Mark, from Belfast, N.Ireland

I offer you 50$ for your bass since the the neck is a little bit bent...

Let me know if you need extra cash Kris

JF X-)

Thanks for sharing your story Krist!

If only I wasn't born in 92, and instead 1970, so I could have actually witnessed this when this happened, and watch my idols play live! D:

Nice work Krist!

Great story, Krist! Thanks for the music and the memories...From a fellow Dodson Junior High inmate (1978-79...were we ever really that young?)

Nirvana still rocks ;) Thanks for posting from CZECH REPUBLIC

Nice work Krist!

Sad as it may sound I've been waiting years for the 'missing' part of the VMA's story - what happened between you and Duff. I've heard hundreds of versions over the years but even the believable ones never could be proven and I've always been left wondering about the truth.

Now, at last, I know.

And for the record frustrating as I'm sure it was that remains the best awards show performance I have ever seen. If they were all that interesting they'd be worth watching!

My God!!
It was the best vma ever! Rock´n Roll needs now histories like this one. That was a time tha music was not boring as it is today.
The last year of fun in mainstrem.

Chris, I don't know if you remember me from last week, but I was the guy that handed you that T-shirt ( brand new I might add - just bought it for 9 bucks )while you were pucking your guts out. Glad to see you're doing better now and when will I get my 9 bucks back ( you keep the shirt, it's a gift )?

nah, I was just joking. It's a bad karma to lie about such things - he never was puking and never did I give him a T-shirt - those 9 bucks were just so he could get himself a weird looking tranny and buy himself a cookie

Hey Krist.

I loved that vma so much, i wish i was there to see you guys but unfortunatly i was only 1 at the time. Anyway thanks for sharing that and thanks for Nirvana, you guys were the greatest.

Peace out.

Mr. Novoselic I'm aware you very well might not read this ever, I'm a letter in hopes of contacting you so no worries. I'm nobody pretty much, but I'd like to meet you someday if possible so I'm just leaving my e-mail here. Also, I wanted to read about the time the bass fell on your head, but I'm not up for it right now. Peace.

Kriste ljudino! Hvala sto si bacio novo svjetlo na taj legendarni dogadjaj! Uberkool!

So I say's to myself, I say's, "I am very disappointed in yourself Fbrewers." Maybe I shouldn't let my reflection speak.

Great recollection, but it made me sad for some reason.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Great story!! I would also love to hear about what happened in Dallas, right before you got mega big, when the bouncer at Trees ran you off stage!!! What a hoot! The show was great!!!

Krist, Your such an interesting person.

Ok, this is a bit disappointing. That Cobain/Rose story has been published in full detail in certain Cobain biographies.
" what really happened... " seems like a misleading title.

The bass-toss part was most interesting though.

For some weird reason, I've always wondered if Kurt Cobain really managed to kick Mr Novoselic in the butt. One of those legendary funny moments...

krist!!! you should give me an autograph!! I love you and the guys!
RIP kurt.

and i have some questions to ask you about nirvana. and tom grant.

-kristina

Great article Krist! I enjoyed reading it since I'm a huge nirvana fan. Now i see what really happened.
since i have the opportunity
I just thought i would tell you that you (nirvana) changed my life completely as other bands changed your life. Because of you i have started my own and i play with passion, just how music should be,
so thanks man, thanks a lot.

You sound like some fat old jock talking about how you almost won the homecoming game. When's your NEW album coming out?

Hey Krist-

Is it true that someone spit on Axl's piano too before he was supposed to perform?

It's still the best VMA performance ever on what has to be considered the greatest assemblage of bands playing on the VMA's. So much tension and so many incredible bands it's only natural that things got crazy and egos collided.

hey, its really cool to see you're writing blogs. i found out today that you've been writing for seattle weekly and i'm really digging it, so keep it up!

i saw you with flipper earlier this year at amoeba music in san francisco. it was the first time i had ever seen you play live, and it was quite the opportunity because you've been an inspiration since i was 11 years old (i'm 26 now).

just wanted to let you know that i really appreciate what you do.

peace

Thank you so much Krist! True Nirvana fans like me are proud that we already knew that story!

I'm sorry to hear that you and Shelli didn't work out. Kurt would be saddened by that, I'm sure (and Courtney too, ha ha).

I'm sure you can't share the whole story behind Kurt's death, but I'd love to talk to you about it some time. I know Courtney's behind it.

Thanks so much for all you and Nirvana gave to us in such a short time. I really miss the three of you together.

Peace, Kristin

I remember watching this live on TV. Your bass hitting your face made the show! I love the moment you stood there waiting for your bass to come down from the air. One detail you forgot to mention: After the performance a camera crew interviewed you and they did a close-up on your forehead (the cut). They asked if you were alright. You said "I'm OK." Then you softly sang "Oh I... I'm still alive" (Pearl Jam song). Very silly.

I totally remember watching live on t.v. I stll never got passed Kurts death

Please write another book. Please.
That was one great story out of the zillion you probably have to tell. You do look about 16-17 in that picture.

HIGH chris. I was asked to tell you something. Nirvana would have been shit without you. Sorry books come out with unwritten law terms but it wasnt sent was it. Kurt loved you dude and hopefully you already know that.
That goes the same for me. No bandmates NO NIRVANA. I cant even picture that band without you. Friendly,
Jared

I share the same pet peeve with the escalators. I have always been half tempted to walk down the opposite side just to prove a point. Your band Nirvana changed my life. My childhood fantasy was that I would start a band with you. I am not delusional,
as I have actually dedicated my life to writing music via a spark/ignition from Nirvana. I promise I would only be starstruck for a few minutes. I am 29 years old, went to college and have a "real" job. I am very responsible but have not given up on my dream. I would love to hear from you. Peace, Dave

Though it makes me really sad that neither you nor Dave seem to care about the way Kurt died I am happy that I found your blog.
It gives me a little of those grazy times back when we were all young and when your music changed my life. I still listen to Nirvana every day and will never forget all three of you.
Keep going, Kris and dont forget Kurt about it

Hey Krist,
Rick from framingham here.. LTNS...

wow.. thank you very much for telling this story.. Havent seen you since you came to boston last election cycle for the book signing...
I remember watching it live and thinking gosh.. krist just hurt himself bad. Do you still have headaches from it?
you forgot the part about kurt kicking you on the way off stage, i dont think he was looking towards you when you got hit on the head.

im having bass problems my self...
gimme an email madcap54@hotmail.com

One more other thing Krist...
Release fecal matter and the rest of the 4th album that was recorded (including the stuff you and dave did in the studio on jan27-28th 1994.)

and i just read the heartfelt apology of duff. Imagine if the internet had been as prevalent in 1992... this incident and i believe the rest of the timeline would have played out much differently...

binary universes anyone?
discuss.
oh krist btw.. we have some copies of the massachusetts shows from fall of 1993 for you. do you remember staying in fitchburg on the in utero tour with the meat puppets.
did u guys have a chance to check out quabbin and the ghost towns?

www.justiceforkurt.com

My Bro has that same model Bass and it's neck is bent a little too...Maybe Gibson had a design flaw w/ that series??? I dunno? but the active electronics sound awesome unless the battery's dead then it distorts and sounds awful. Hmmmm maybe your batteries were dead that night and it wasn't the bass rig that was the problem?

Great Story!

great story

i wish i could have gotten to see nirvana perform in person at a small club. as was stated in a previous post nirvana has influenced me on multiple levels. even though i never got the pleasure of witnessing a nirvana performance live and in the flesh i am grateful for all the great music that has been recorded. thank you nirvana

Great to hear from Krist. I found the link to this in a British newspaper, and as soon as I saw 'Seattle Weekly' I thought - yup, it's Krist. And I'm not gonna lie, it made me smile more than I have in a long time.
My brother and I are huge supporters of the whole anti- 'standing on escalators' movement... In fact we do barge passed people quite happily.
We'd love to hear more from you.

Rhizz.

P.S Merry Kristmas. I can't believe I just said that...

it is currently down system. also anyone can get out it.

it is simply saying that can be solve i think. becouse the way to help it is only Granit

Nice read. Great to see you and Duff are now friends. The '92 MTV VMA's war the last actual VMA show worth watching. I am trying to remember who all played: Nirvana and GN'R of course, Def Leppard and Pearl Jam maybe ??? At anyrate atleast all bands on the bill wrote their own music and actually played their own instruments unlike the crap MTV cater to today. Nice read.

Ok, this is a bit disappointing. That Cobain/Rose story has been published in full detail in certain Cobain biographies.

Krist, enjoyed reading your column and your post on the bass throwing incident. We just moved to bellingham WA from the East coast and really enjoy it out here so far, hope your new band can make it up here to Bellingham sometime in the near future, take care, pat

Hi Krist,
Thanks for sharing your special
moment with the world :)

Krist, you're the best. From Argentina,
