Gas prices got so high in 2008 that Washington, Oregon, and Idaho spent a combined $30 billion importing fossil fuels, reports Sightline Daily. That averages out to $2,500 per resident.

Government accountability and transparency are good things, but it is kind of amazing how we beef over the value of transit packages that cost a tiny fraction of what we fork over to entirely unaccountable oil companies for our decreasingly sustainable car travel.
