On the same day that the abstinence-nutty Bush Administration said goodbye, Portland mayor Sam Adams admitted to the Willamette Week that he had a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old intern and lied about it.
Getting it on with your barely legal, not-yet-out-of-the-closet intern is pretty sleazy behavior, as is blaming the rumors on a smear campaign. And it's a shame that the first big-city gay mayor had to do it.
Less scandalous behavior in more conservative Spokane got Jim West booted from office. (West offered internships to 18-year-olds he met through gay dating and hook-up websites.) And of course Bill Clinton's lies about his affair with Monica Lewinsky led to emetic bloviation from Republicans and Joe Lieberman, Ken Starr's creepy report, and the crowning farce of impeachment proceedings.
But as with his predecessors, what Adams did should not be that big a deal. It's just a garden-variety, small-scale, and entirely legal abuse of power. Let's save the recalls for hardcore malfeasance and let the Ken Starrs of the world do their prosecuting on talk radio.
