UW Prof Snags Slavery Book Award, $25K

smallwood_blog.jpg
File this one under awards and categories we never knew existed, but are glad to know exist. University of Washington associate professor of history Stephanie Smallwood just earned Yale's Frederick Douglass Book Prize for her Saltwater Slavery: A Middle Passage from Africa to American Diaspora (Harvard University Press, $17.95). It's the tenth such honor bestowed by Yale for new books on slavery or abolition, which carries with it a $25,000 prize Nice going, Stephanie! And good luck getting tenure. Her success reminds us of another Seattle author, Charles Johnson, who earned the 1990 National Book for Middle Passage, which dealt with the same terrible historical topic. Maybe those two should do a panel discussion together.
