Hearst: Still Examining P-I Options

hearst.gif
"A number of people think tomorrow is the last day," says P-I reporter Robert McClure, asked about the looming shutdown of the print P-I and likely launching of a revamped electronic edition. "And some think otherwise." Columnist Joel Connelly says "It could be tomorrow, yes. But that's the first drop-dead date," and it could be anytime this week or next. A third P-I staffer says most people have moved belongings out in case there is a 24-hour notice to clear the room.

What does Hearst say about rumors the corporation may spring an early print closure on the staff tomorrow, rather than the most likely ball-parked date, March 18? "We continue to examine our options," Hearst spokesperson Lisa Bagley told me late this afternoon, "and have no announcement at this time regarding our plans."

Connelly says "Some of us are hopeful about what the online website can do," and he's among a small contingent that is likely to stay on. Nonetheless, Connelly adds, "It's getting a little difficult to get any work done in the office with this thing hanging over us."
