New KOMO, P-I Partnership
It's something just how natural the P-I globe might look atop Fisher Plaza, the high-tech home of Fisher Communications including KOMO TV, the P-I's news partner. An electronic P-I newsroom could fit in nicely there if its current news operation is downsized by as much as 85 percent when the print edition is folded by Hearst, as threatened, within days. Besides the TV and radio news gathering operations of KOMO that could augment a small eP-I staff, seattlepi.com could be served by the Fisher Interactive Network, which hosts the corporation's websites from Texas to Washington.
That's not merely speculation. "A relationship with the [electronic] P-I is being explored," a KOMO editor told me this morning. Such a relationship seemed to be emerging In recent days. The P-I has increasingly been running stories - not just links - by KOMO staffers, four this weekend alone. Now KOMO has begun picking up P-I staff-written pieces as well, including a downtown tunnel story and another about Hearst's plans to go online only. "There should be more about it soon," said the KOMO editor. "We're supposed to talk about it in our morning news meeting."
