Welcome to the Era of ORCA!
Friday, we got the mascot. Today we get the card. The era of ORCA (One Regional Card for All) has finally arrived!![]()
Steve is as excited to celebrate the 4/20 roll-out as 4/20 celebrants are excited about Steve.
Basically, it's the card that you can use on all your transit trips--except maybe the SLUT (we'll check when business hours arrive), and it's unclear how many people are using that anyway. The card is so fancy that you don't even have to swipe it; you just hold it near the reader. No more time-consuming and cumbersome pocket-plumbing for the correct change.
A couple fun tidbits: According to Wikipedia (yes, there's an ORCA card page on wikipedia), we may have jacked the name from our Canuck neighbors. And the ACLU, worried about how the card might enable stalking and other privacy invasions, pushed for greater privacy safeguards, most of which it seems, the ORCA board met. Either way, if you want to be the coolest person on your bus, flash this card today. Or wear this jacket.
