Port Orchard Sheriff Buys Pot Grower New Heat Lamps; Bremerton/Port Orchard Rivalry Percolates

Mike Shepherd wants to be the next mayor of Bremerton.
PORT ORCHARD, WASH. MAY 28, 2009 -- Last March, a Kitsap County jury acquitted Bruce Olson on charges that he grew more medical marijuana than allowed by state law. During the trial, after the prosecutor attempted to introduce an "example ballast" as evidence, it came to light that the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office had destroyed much of the evidence in the case, including Mr. Olson's growing equipment.
This morning, Mr. Olson met with officials from the Sheriff's Office, who agreed to pay him $2,000 for his grow lights. After signing some paperwork, Mr. Olson walked out of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office with a check in hand.
Now that Bremerton's shit-talking mayor is headed for the door, no less than SIX candidates are stepping up to take his megaphone. And while the candidates sharpen their campaign pitches, our advice for those vying for the position of Bremerton's cheerleader-in-chief is the following slogan: At least we're not Port Orchard.
If the last couple months has taught us anything, it's that when Bremerton's mayor talks smack, people listen, and an undeveloped downtown Bremerton is still better than what passes for downtown Port Orchard and their waterfront parking lots. Would-be mayors, if you want ink, start a rivalry. And Port Orchard's only a foot ferry away. That 60-minute cruise to Seattle is getting to be a bit much.

I was just in Port Orchard over the weekend, and it struck me that it's set up perfectly to engage Bremerton and its already robust fleet of Naval battleships in an old-fashioned battle at sea, provided it gets someone to equip it with a lethal armada of its own. Bremerton is wasting its time by playing up its rivalry with Bainbridge; Islanders could give a fuck. More appropriate would be the formation of a rivalry with its likeminded blue-collar rival across the sea, which, hate to say it, Korny, has a downtown entertainment district (six bars, a movie theatre, a couple restaurants, a bike/skate shop, some antique stores, etc) that desolate Bremerton would cream its pants to have.
