The Amazing Edwards Twins

edwardstwins.jpg
I'm not sure how I'd never heard of the Anthony and Eddie Edwards, a.k.a. The Edwards Twins--maybe it's because i don't watch the Today Show (and do click that link)--but holy shit are they amazing! They're Bette Midler, Elton John, Billy Joel, Sonny and Cher, Kermit the Frog, and many others. In fact, 150 in total. And they're identical twins, middle-aged ones. It seems there's no impression this Massachusetts-based duo can't do. They could probably show up at my apartment tomorrow morning and do duel impressions of me so well that I would think I was having a nightmare I couldn't wake up from and end up swallowing my tongue like Miggs in Silence of the Lambs.

But that'd be okay, because like a woman who once got on Letterman's Stupid Human Tricks for the same, I can actually swallow my tongue and not choke on it. Which is not much of a talent, but which would allow me to stick around and watch them do their show, impressions of people who actually are talented. Sadly, I haven't seen them at Julia's on Broadway yet. But they'll be doing a regular run, and it certainly looks like it's worth checking out, as the show appears to be, in a word, awesome.

In some ways, it sounds like a novelty act--like, "Okay, okay, you do impressions of famous people. We get it." But this is some serious artistry. It's a great cover band's mastery of the music combined with a top-notch impressionist's voice and mannerism mimicry combined with an animated version of Madame Toussad's wax museum. The outfits are to a T. The twins even wear false teeth. I haven't seen an entire show, but it seems like the kind of thing that would build steam as it goes. As in, "They can't possibly do another celebrity well." And then they do it.

The Edwards Twins, Sundays through Wednesdays until September 27 (dinner 6:30, show 8:30), Julia's on Broadway, 300 Broadway E., 860-1818, $20.00 Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.
