These men demand cigarettes
Today's "we're going to hell in a handbasket" story comes out of Belltown, where an ordinary bumming of a smoke turned into a racial invective-filled fist-and-knife fight. Reports the P-I:

According to police one of a group of men asked the victim for a cigarette. He refused, and the suspect got mad, asking whether he didn't get a smoke because he is black.

The other men joined in. Harsh words and racial slurs were exchanged. The victim and suspect exchanged punches.

After it ended, the victim realized that he had been stabbed.

Another victim of Belltown's underground cigarette trade, the victim was taken to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the suspect got away, so we have no way of knowing whether he ever ended up scoring a cig.
