Christopher Monfort, Suspect in Murder of Officer Tim Brenton, Wanted to Be a Cop
UPDATE: The college student who sold Monfort his Datsun says the alleged cop-killer creeped him out. Details after the jump.
Christopher Monfort as a UW scholar in 2008.
Thanks to the hard work of reporters at the Seattle Times and P-I, we now know a lot more about Christopher Monfort, the 41-year-old Tukwila man suspected of killing Officer Timothy Brenton on Halloween night. And the more we learn, the more Monfort lines up with the profile provided by Seattle police on Thursday: a man who both acts like, and admires, the police officer he gunned down.
The paper-trail left behind by Monfort suggests a man whose idealism may have soured over time into disillusionment. Rosemary Stevens rented a room to Monfort 18 years ago in Pasadena. The actress tells the P-I that while he was working as a waiter in a steakhouse, Monfort's dream was to wear a badge for the L.A.P.D.
Monfort's story picks up again in 2004, when he was studying in the administration of justice program at Highline Community College. Garry Wegner is the program's coordinator and Monfort's former adviser. The program is often used as a training ground for future cops, but Wegner says police work was no longer Monfort's goal.
Monfort at UW showing his project on the controversial theory of "jury nullification."
Wegner says Monfort told him he "wanted to make a difference in society" so he suggested law school. Monfort earned his bachelors in Law, Societies and Justice at the University of Washington in March of 2008. Afterwards, he applied for a minority scholars program, a natural pre-cursor to graduate school, and listed Wegner as his inspiration.
"You've shaken me to my toes," Wegner told a Times reporter when told of his former proteges arrest.
While in the UW scholarship program, Monfort focused on the work of Paul Butler, a law professor at George Washington University. Butler is a proponent of a controversial tactic known as jury nullification, whereby a jury can ignore a judge's instructions and acquit defendants, especially black defendants convicted of a non-violent crime, no matter how strong the case against them.
"It is the moral responsibility of black jurors to emancipate some guilty black outlaws," Butler wrote in a 1995 Yale Law Journal article, adding: "My goal is the subversion of American criminal justice, at least as it now exists."
As the Times reports, Monfort, who is half-black, wrote in his project abstract that he wished to "illimunate and further" Butler's scholarship.
Wegner is the last person quoted to have spoken at length with Monfort. He says they touched base five or six months ago. Monfort was "driving truck" and volunteering his Friday's at a juvenile detention center.
According to a police source, Monfort was said to have been laid off recently from a job as a security guard or private investigator. He has no known felony history. But in the last two years, Monfort was cited for three traffic infractions, including driving without insurance on October 16th, roughly two weeks before the shooting.
On October 22nd, four police vehicles went up in flames at a maintenance yard near Qwest Field. Investigators later revealed that a note threatening police officers, a pipe bomb and anti-police-brutality fliers were found at the scene. Police are now saying Monfort is suspected of that arson as well.
Attempts to reach Monfort's mother Suzan have thus far been unsuccessful. But the Times did speak with Vicki Malone, her business partner in a Curves in Bethel, Alaska, who said that Suzan was on her way to Seattle to check on the condition of her only child.
Monfort was upgraded from critical to serious condition this morning at Harborview. He was shot in the head yesterday after pulling a gun on officers attempting to talk to him outside his Tukwila apartment. More information as it comes.
UPDATE: The search also turned up evidence that a police source told the Times may be connected to the October 22nd arson at a police maintenance yard that torched three squad cars.
UPDATE: Police say an American flag was recovered from both the shooting and the arson.
So even before Monfort was a suspect, police had good reason to suspect the same man was behind both crimes. Police also found two rifles inside Monfort's apartment. Including one "military-style" assault rifle that may have been used in the shooting.
UPDATE: Seattle Crime reports that there's tension between the rank-and-file and the higher-ups at the police department.
One officer who Jonah Spangenthal-Lee spoke with was frustrated that the note threatening the lives of police officers found at the October 22nd arson wasn't made public. He told Lee that normally after such information is shared, officers avoid doing routine traffic stops or pulling over on the side of the road, the same position Officer Brenton was in when he was murdered.
Department spokesman Sean Whitcomb says that the break-in at the police maintenance yard should have been enough to put officers on alert.
UPDATE: Prosecutors are considering filing an aggravated first-degree murder charge against Monfort. The only two penalties are life in prison or the death penalty.
Ian Goodhew, deputy chief of staff for King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, told the Times that the charge could come by the middle of the week. Meanwhile, defense attorneys are apparently "jockeying" for the chance to represent Monfort. Understandable, since whoever gets to be his lawyer will presumably get a lot of ink and the rare chance to work a death penalty case.
UPDATE: Julie Lawry, a public defender with Associated Council for the Accused, tells the Times that Monfort hasn't spoken with his family or an attorney since being shot.
"I have been told he's in a secure location, he hasn't asked for an attorney and we can't see him," Lawry told the Times. "I don't know if he has the mental capacity to request a lawyer. He's being isolated from anyone who can assist him."
Lawry's hearing is at 4 PM today. We've got a call in with her and will update the story as soon as we hear back.
UPDATE: At an afternoon news conference, police say DNA found at the arson and murder of Officer Brenton matches up with what they've recovered from Monfort's apartment. They also say the assault rifle owned by Monfort is a ballistics match to the weapon used to shoot Brenton and Sweeney.
Assistant Chief Pugel also gave more information about the arson that claimed four police vehicles. He said they believe that Monfort set the first vehicle on fire as bait in order to harm first responders with the three bombs he then used to blow up the other cars.

The assault rifle police linked to the Brenton murder.

A bomb laying on Monfort's stove, possibly rigged as a booby trap.

Improvised explosives.

And a bag full of more home-made bombs.

The Datsun police say Monfort was driving. Investigators say the car has a bullet hole, presumably from when Officer Sweeney returned fire.
UPDATE: Monfort left two notes at the scene. One of which he dedicated to Travis Bruner, the trainee who witnessed the beating of a 15-year-old girl by a King County deputy.
The note says: "These deaths are dedicated to Deputy Travis Bruner. You swear on a solemn oath to protect us from all harm, that includes you. Start policing each other or get ready to attend a lot of police funerals."
UPDATE: According to King 5, investigators found "massive" amounts of child pornography on Monfort's computer. But no one else is talking.
The report is a day old, but since then no one else has reported the same development. So is it true? Don Donohoe, spokesman for the King County prosecutor's office, says we'll just have to wait until tomorrow.
"On that specific information I'm going to hold off on any comment," he says.
A formal announcement of the charges against Monfort should be made at tomorrow's 10:30 AM news conference. We'll keep you posted.
UPDATE: Carey Rose sold Monfort his 1980 Datsun 210 hatchback in the summer of 2008. The alleged killer seemed normal, said Rose, except that he wouldn't stop calling him to complain about the car's gas mileage.
We signed our names. I handed him the keys, he handed me $900 in cash, and I thought that was that.(H/T: Seattle 911)Monfort called me a day or two later, saying he was in the area and asking if I was at my house. He said he had driven 30 miles, or roughly the distance from Bellevue to his home in Tukwila and then back again. He said he had clocked the gas mileage at approximately 20 miles per gallon. I had advertised it as 27.
At first, I was concerned. This man I barely know lives in Tukwila but is suddenly back in my neighborhood with complaints. I still wonder why he thought it was appropriate to come to my home to tell me about this when no more than a phone call was needed. In addition, I was irritated because 30 miles isn't a long-enough distance to measure fuel consumption. I politely explained that to him, and he agreed to go through a full tank. He then asked if I wanted to jam. I said not today.
I continued to receive the occasional text message and voicemail from Monfort during the weeks that followed. At first he continued to complain about the gas mileage, though he eventually conceded that he was mistaken in his measurements.
He continued to insist that he wanted to jam with me, and I continued to make excuses.

Chris was not a terrorist. He loved and respected the law. His track record not only exemplifies that, but also his ideals reflected his commitment to support the community, a community which includes law enforcement. These allegations are preposterous. It seems when a man of color pursues greatness he is tracked down like a run-away slave when it is obvious that he has God-given abilities. Take time to reflect on his life and his track record. Do his past actions look even remotely close to the allegations this police department is making? Who saw the incident? What witnesses do the police have? I know my brother and I know he is no criminal. From what I understand from the community in Seattle, the police department has been known to abuse black males. Living in Los Angeles during the riots, this looks very similar in police tactics to me. I would hope you would use your publication as a vehicle to find what the "truth" truly is. Not only are they trying to kill my brother, but they are trying to kill his reputation as an honest, brilliant, focused, hard-working African-American man. If you need some background information that is truthful and unbiased you can contact me at any time. Please do not hide nor withhold this email from anyone. We have nothing to hide. Also, tell the police department to let Christopher's mother see him in the hospital. That's her right as a mother. Thank you.

So you pull the race card, ronald. Also from the story, he's an only child, how are you his brother?
He pulled a gun on police when he could have been taken quickly and quietly, but no, he had to act a fool and run. I'm also glad he was shot but not killed. He needs to face what he did and spend his life in prison.

In the spirit of Paul Butler, the law professor at George Washington University who suggests that evidence should be overlooked by jurors, if the evidence against Monfort is weak, they should convict him anyway. What goes around, comes around.

Innocent until proven guilty is what people in a court of law are supposed to abide by. Those outside the court system and with more than two brain cells can see that even if this guy was innocent if killing the cop, he is most definitely guilty of trying to shoot the police officers who apprehended him.

Ronald, let me guess.....you're black. It pisses me off to no end, when race is always brought up. Take a way the fact that he was in querstion of fire bombing police cars, take a way the fact that he had assault weapons in his car, take a way the fact that he pointed a gun not once....but twice. Oh crap, he's black, therefor, he couldn't/didn't do any of this. Yeah, just ask the mothers in Chicago of the black kids who got shot and killed by other black kids, just because they wouldn't join their gangs, how pathetic. Yeah, that sounds about right, let's let some white guy go, and pin all this on some un-suspecting black man. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, well guess what Ronald, it's usually a duck

Oh yea, Ronald, if you're so tired of blacks being potrayed as being done wrong, then go to one of your all black colleges, join their all black law programs, get a law degree, then go to an all black TV channel, BET and voice your concerns there. I'm not prejudice or racist, but how do you feel blacks are potrayed bad, look at all the crazy ass white people killing their own babies, parents and classmates, and you know what white people say....execute them quickly. We don't make some poor, pathetic excuse of them being framed for being white. Ronald, you're a discrace to all black people and you're probably more racist than any white or Mexican person there is.

Ronald, by your standards of racial rationalization, Emmitt Till deserved to die. After all, his killers were "innocent" and just 'represented their community' the best way they saw fit. It's bigoted mindsets like yours that makes the behavior of the Christopher Monfort's possible. You rationalize, make excuses for, and enable it, and morally you're basically the same. A terrorist, hardly. They at least murder people for political reasons. Just a good old-fashioned, cold-blooded killer, who couldn't accept that he was a loser in life. Well, that's another thing you have in common with Mr. Monfort.

Ronald - that is NO excuse. That man is guilty, why do you think he covered up his Datsun? The car PROVEN to be at the scene of the crime. And why would he pull a gun on law enforcement? Oh, liberal progressive Seattle... Its so funny how we portray ourselves as so PC. then when we get comfortable or put on our cyber masks, then the truth comes out. Listen Ronald is just expressing his opinion. AND I would add that for those who "are not racist or anything..but" jumping immediately to accusing someone of pulling the race card (w/ by the way is a very antiquated notion, you know that being a person of color doesnt win you anything, but actually being white does) If we claim to be such free and progressive thinkers and Dems then we definitely have the ability to question information that is fed to us by the media. And unless you witnessed the crime then really you dont know what happened. You guys are jumping Ronald and getting into his business (his own opinion about someone he cares about)for what reason? just think about it, could it be fear that what Ronald mentions does exist? I mean this negative prejudiced ignorant rhetoric can happen around a personal statement in a "progressive" city.. So these things which we are afraid of, these things which are un-seen do exist. And it is only when the truth that we are afraid of starts to be exposed.. that ugly thing we have tryed to avoid (like the reality of racism and the inherent privilege of being white, and shame behind these inequities) rises up, that our first reaction is anger, but I encourage us to look further beyond that visceral response and understand that this hatred has been inherited. Look I am white and I have racist thoughts, it is ingrained into my DNA. But because I am awake enough to understand this, that I am honest enough to admit this, and can see clearly that inequity is drawn racially, that I can work on it and see that the responses to Ronald's post is out of fear, that something like the false imprisonment/and incrimination of someone can and does happen every day.

Jessica...
So being white means that you are genetically predisposed to being a racist? I wholeheartedly disagree. And people attacking Ronald's opinion has nothing to do with racial prejudice. I'd say that in actuality they are attacking his opinion because his opinion seems ludicrous to anyone with common sense. In our discussions as citizens we are not bound by the same rules as the courts... we can discuss the guilt of the accused openly and we do not need to assume he is innocent... we have pleny of information that points to Monfort being the perpetrator of these crimes. Perceiving yourself as being disadvantaged (for any reason) does not justify cold-blooded murder. It also does not justify being a coward, as Monfort so obviously is...

Funny that CNN never tallies, mentions these statistics.
Why is it that for every 1 black woman raped by a black guy, there are over 100 white women raped by black guys?
And why is it that for every one black guy killed by a white guy, there are 10 white guys killed by black male?
And why is it that the national media refuses to address this year after year after year?

Jessica, unfortunately you are right. We could assume that the reporters fabricated this entire story and put it in the news and or internet. Also, since everyone in the United States is unable to live on that little street and witness the crime first hand, unfortunate for us, we must rely on the news to deliver the information and who knows, maybe they are ALL lying and giving false information to frame this man who again, unfortunately is black. So, yes everyone does have a right to voice their personal opinion, such as yourself. It also gives Muslims the right to say "their" Allah is great and all non-Muslims should die, then again, that could be propaganda also. Now you and I know not all Muslims are bad, just as all blacks, whites and hispanics. However, when it "is what it is" you could waste your time and argue about. As with virtually any crime in America there could be the ideology "if you didn't see it first hand, then how do you know he/she done it?" Well Jessica, have you ever seen some one first hand pour gas on themselves and set themselves on fire?, didn't think so, but sometimes you just have to read between the lines and put two and two together. Now, this being America, I could have just came out and called you a liberal idiot, but I didn't, but that still doesn't mean you're not one.

I've read your comments and have taken time to respond cognitively instead of emotionally. I would laugh at some of the comments as if I was watching Jerry Springer if not for the seriousness of this matter. The truth hurts. Without a video camera or some type of physical evidence it seems that he has been prosecuted already. WOW! Let's discuss his background once again. He is a scholar, a hard worker, a law abiding citizen with no criminal history. He's half white, hmmm. His uncle, who is white, helped design and operate the space shuttle. His aspirations have always been to participate in some form or fashion with our government, preferably in the military. Have any of you taken the time to do any research on this man who happens to be bi-racial? And for those comments stating that African-Americans are cold-blooded killers, please be reminded that he is also white.
America was built on sound principles that came from oppressed people (the protestants escaping persecution in England). These ideals stem from past negative experiences. The oppressors did not give consideration to the oppressed. So in lies the problem. This country is the greatest country in the world. I love this country. But for some reason, history is not being revisited. And you know what they say about a society that doesn't know it's history. They are bound to repeat it.
Look at the word 'fear.' It's an acronym - False Evidence Appearing Real - hmmm. Put yourself in his shoes. What if the police lied? Is that a stretch? All I have to say is Rodney King. But that's right, you saw the video tape of the King beating. And since then have you seen other incidences of police brutality on television or the Internet?
We will not reach our true potential as a country until we can see each other as equals. I have faith that the true 'killer' will be brought to justice. What I'm asking you wonderful people is to take a deep breath, lean back in your chair, and think outside of the little, scary, narrow box that you are in. What if he was your son? How would you feel about the comments that are posted here? Our differences will be our strengths if we choose to listen. God bless America.

Once again, let's all jump on the "Oh-it's-the-Black-man's-fault" bandwagon. I'm tired of it. So allow me a First Amendment-protected moment now to comment more broadly beyond the Christopher Monfort case itself. Personally, I believe all whites are racists, and I mean ALL of them (deep down that includes even you "Tony", "jessica", and "Ronald Taylor"). It is a fact that racism is genetically and environmentally bred into whites. But one day whites **WILL** be the minority in America (its already happening now right under their pink little noses). Trust me, when Blacks and Hispanics eventually become the majority, whites will finally have the ordained opportunity to understand the other side of the racial coin. What goes around, comes around. Indeed, this cultural date with destiny is unalterable -- the white race is weak, getting weaker, and becoming more diluted (and deluded) year after year. Whether you like it or not, it is the People of Color who will prevail and thrive on this planet (with whites ultimately providing a minor, secondary role in Mankind's long-term future). Look around -- its the natural evolution of America, if not the world. The "New Normal" is coming sooner than later to a society near you. Get used to it.

I find it interesting that you are so sure that he is innocent "without a video camera or some type of physical evidence." You on the other hand aren't suggesting that it might not be true, you're insisting that it isn't. Were you there?
Right minded people don't shoot at police officers.
In any case, you're gonna feel pretty foolish next week when your brother confesses.

If it had been a white person that pulled a weapon and aimed it at the officers at the apartment, do you think they wouldn't have shot him? Color has no bearing when it comes to crime. If you run from the police....they're gonna chase you and give you a butt whoopin'. If you point a gun at the police....they gonna shoot you!
You say your brother loved and respected the law? Is running from and pointing a gun at police, your idea of love and respect of the law? I have to disagree with you.

First of all, the media is saying "suspected" cop killer, but as more evidence comes out it isn't looking good for Christopher Monfort. Black or white, it doesn't matter. What is important here, if he did do this, what happened to this law abiding citizen to "turn" on the people that he so admired?? This is not something that just happened overnight, there had to be signs that his attitude or demeanor had changed?? Why did nobody notice this and reach out to help him. Mr. Taylor as his "half" brother did you communicate with him on a daily, weekly, monthly, basis? If so, then why did you not notice a change in him and if you didn't keep in touch is it "guilt" for lack of communication that has you professing his innocence?
And let's not forget, that you don't have to be white to be a racist. A racist comes in any color, shape or sex.

So Rayshaun, what you're saying is you're not racist. If you do, then I say you're a racist and a liar. Statistically I guess it's the Cracka's fault 58% of people in the penetiniary are black, and it's Whitey's fault that 64% of people on welfare in California are blacks, mainly un-wed black women who have an average of 3.5 kids. You have your own colleges, own scholorships and every other source needed to be some body, but you can't because you're not willing to do the one thing needed, take some initiative. By the way, I'm what you would call a wet back although I'm legal as are both my parents, so i'm not taking up for what you call Whitey, I'm just calling it like I see it, and in this case, guilty or not, I don't know. Nevertheless, your apology is accepted. By the way, although I do detect a little racial paranoia on your part, perhaps you can talk some sense into your brother "Butweet". He's trying hard, but he needs some quality, racially-enlightened mentorship (online and probably in real life too).
Butweet -- I'm not going to argue with you. The fact is, your unsafe driving rightfully caught the attention of law enforcement. You were quite literally endangering countless lives on that Interstate. Thank goodness for the timely traffic stop! Were you expecting the police to overlook your reckless behavior just because you are white?! My god, how *typical* (and wholly unprofessional) of you and your kind. But, as "Tony" above would agree, you have clearly (and rather ironically) proved my point here for all to see. (That said, I do find it humorous that your quick and full admission of guilt appears to be the only redeeming quality that you exhibit.) Lastly, I must add that your "I will take responsibility for my own actions . . . don't you wish everyone would?" comment is out of line. If you are going to attack the irrational comments from "Siggy" and "JD" above, go direct with them and leave me out of it, fair enough? In fact, I suggest you simply ignore the comments here that you don't like (or can't comprehend). Now, please let the adults continue to converse here without further interruption. Thanks.

What's the matter with you Black people? You won't face up to the problems that are peculiar to your race.
First off, you keep voting Democrat, and you are still mostly a bunch of poor, uneducated welfare sloths. When are you going to wake up and join the party that wants to see you working and productive?
Secondly, you've denegerated into a bunch of sex-crazed animals that have infused your whole culture with song, poetry, and stage glorifying pre-marital sex, when in reality it is one of the main reasons you remain on the bottom.
Thirdly, you kill each other and are responsible for 95% of the violent crime in America. You have a bad attitude!
You were once a proud, independent people, and now you live on the crumbs from your White Masters. It is not the fault of the Whites! It was YOUR choice to receive it.
The only way you'll ever amount to anything is to get off your lazy black butts and remake yourselves, and stop blaming Whitey for your problems, and stop receiveing his hand-outs, as this is how they keep you under their control, especially the Democrats! The only ones responsible for your problems are YOU, the Black Race!
Thank you.

So being white means that you are genetically predisposed to being a racist?
uh huh, Ian. And being white, to you, in the 21st century, means one is genetically predisposed to being NOT AT ALL responsible for the racism going on now? Sorry, Ian, I'm white, and I'm with Jessica on this. We whites need to take a SERIOUS look inside ourselves my friend, if you're also white!

MrUniteUs says:
Men seem to have a more difficult time dealing with the loss of a job or a lover, than women. They have difficult time seeking out and finding help to cope with these issues.
This case reminds me of the laid off worker that just shot 5 people in Florida. These disgruntled worker murder cases always invovle men.
"According to police source, Monfort was said to have been laid off recently from a job as a security guard or private investigator. He has no known felony history. But in the last two years, Monfort was cited for three traffic infractions, including driving without insurance on October 16th, roughly two weeks before the shooting."
This case also reminds me of the Fire Inspector that wrote a book on arson, and was later found guilty of arson.

So, MrUniteUs, are you saying we should feel pity for Monfort? I'd rather eat glass than feel pity for him. Hmm, my husband lost his job. Let's see...no, no, I don't remember him going out and shooting anyone. He got up off his dupa and found another job!! He said even if he could only find work in another state, he would go there and work until things got better here where we live. Now that's what I call responsibility. Oh, and my husband is not an insane, no common sense liberal. He is a Republican. Care to guess what Monfort is?

Well... Seattle Police being extremely corrupt, violent, and uncaring of human life, others' pain, etc. I would go so far as to say this guy didn't even have anything to do with the shooting. It looks like SPD are just setting up another scapegoat, just like that homeless guy at North Seattle CC. Seattle Police have set up a lot of people and when they aren't 100% sure or when they can't prove beyond a reasonable doubt, they manufacture evidence. After all, who wants to save the day and be a good guy or a hero more than the police... Isn't that why they're working such jobs?
Looks like another frame up. Then again he could have done it, but so long as SPD have anything to do with the investigation, all bets are off. I'd assume they shot him because he didn't pay his protection fees for the drugs SPD sells openly on the street.
SPD = CORRUPT LAW ENFORCEMENT. SPD = MOB POLICE. SPD = FAIL.
That's all I have to say. My apologies to the families of the innocent man that was killed, I mean no disrespect, only to open everyone's eyes and let them realize that not everything is as it seems. There's no 100% proof of anything. Think about how easy it would be for someone to set someone else up. Think of how many times cops just like these guys planted drugs on someone because they didn't like them, or had their dog give a false alert so they could violate your constitutional rights (that don't exist anymore really I might add). These crooked cops are playing with fire literally, and every time they have a negative impact on someone's life, they create a potential lunatic Hell bent on vengeance.
Why not just stop the corruption and dope dealing Seattle Police, maybe start reprimanding them and weeding out some of the cowboys that are destroying lives and families. I'm sure this guy Benton got caught in some kind of mob related drug deal or something. But that's just my assumption, as I've seen so many corrupt police officers on the street first hand. They don't work for you, they work for the mob.
Maybe cops are mostly corrupt, or all corrupt as a whole, but SPD are a completely different story, as they usually cover for each other better, and they get away with it. Nobody ever hears about some major corruption scandal, it's always LAPD or NYPD that get the heat for that. SPD just rides on the down low and pockets their chump change the best way they know how. They protect certain dope dealers in various neighborhoods, they rob people, they confiscate and steal items after doing illegal searches and seizure. They beat people up, they kill people, they lie, cheat, and steal, and they are the ones that are supposed to protect us?
I call BS.
Every time I read the news about something like this I wonder "what really happened?". I'm sure there was a lot more to this than just some crazy guy from North Seattle CC just like last time. What a coincidence. Look at all these cases, look at all the people so angry with SPD. Could there be a greater reason? Maybe they destroy lives just as Christopher Monfort supposedly did. Maybe they have put people in prison for things they never did, maybe they killed someone's son or daughter and then made up a crime scene so they wouldn't have to serve a single day in jail... That's the power of your police force. And that's what really happens whether you want to believe it or not.
Thank god I don't live in Seattle anymore. I've never seen so much horror brough about by a single police force. Awful awful people.

actually he didn't say SPD are to blame, he just was stating how corrupt they are and that it wouldn't surprise him. meanwhile you assume some guy named Chris Monfort is to blame, and who told you this? the media... so who is the bigger fool, the person who uses what they know and see around them to draw their own suspicions or the idiot that watches the news and believes every twisted lie on it...
if you think anything in the media is true, you are a complete fool.
the media is owned almost completely by people invested in the political and social interests of the mob, the police, and all kinds of corruptions you would not even believe.
take it or leave it. this is your government... this is your greedy, corrupt, bankrupt, lying, manipulating, murdering, thieving government. you gave your rights and freedoms away, now you have a bunch of prisons, overpopulation, and pure corruption, with more drugs on the streets thanks to the cops raiding their evidence lockers and swapping out sugar, etc.
you wanna know why the purity of drugs is supposedly so low? why heroin is said to be 5% in some of their phony statistics?
i will tell you why. because they put other cuts in it and by the time it gets sent to the lab, there is almost nothing left... but it is enough for a conviction...
also this is why the statistics say "the evil drug dealers even cut cocaine with broken glass!". now if that were true... OK I dont even have to explain that. who's more likely to use broken glass as a cut... a desperate police officer looking for a bonus to his 17 dollar an hour pay or an experienced dope dealer who would opt for an easier cheaper additive like flour or sugar or procaine or any of the stuff the DEA recognizes as being actual cuts.
never trust the police. they are liars. they are the ones re-distributing narcotics to our communities, and the only difference between them and the typical crack dealer on the corner is they get away with it, and they get paid for their time with our tax dollars.
congratulations USA, for a 100% grade A failure. that's why I'm leaving this corrupt country. the economy is going to sink soon too, with the coming depression.
it hasnt even started.

POLICE IN SEATTLE SELL DRUGS AND LIE AND SET PEOPLE UP
THEY PUT INNOCENT PEOPLE IN PRISONS ALONG WITH THE GUILTY
WHY IS IT SO HARD TO BELIEVE THEY SET THIS GUY UP TOO THEN??? IF THEY DO ONE CORRUPT THING THEY WILL DO ANOTHER
THEY ARE LIKE THE BOY THAT CRIED WOLF IN A WAY - YOU KEEP REPEATING AN ACTION AND EVERYONE IS GONNA START TRUSTING YOU LESS AND LESS... WE DONT TRUST SPD
THEY COULD HAVE SHOT THEIR OWN OFFICER AND THEN SET THIS GUY UP, THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT AND GET AWAY WITH IT, THEN TELL THE MEDIA A BUNCH OF BS
JUST THINK ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU START TALKING
theres people in prison for the rest of their life for something everyone knows they did NOT do. why? so a cop can keep his job. this is the reality, it happens. supposedly not often, but it happens. you need to wake up and see what goes on around you because this country is turning into a giant prison and nobody even notices because they sit at home and watch TV all day and believe everything on the media. they watch their news anchors with makeup and phony horizons and they trust them over their own eyes
you want to believe Obama is going to fix the country and that we have a democracy and you want to follow their phony bologna scams and wars and lies, go ahead, but leave me out of it
while you all starve in america and cant get work or anything for your illegitimate kids and screwed up society, I'll be in a country that cares about its people and defends their right to life and liberty
thumbs down for SPD and thumbs down for this corrupt court system and country
dont believe anything, it's mostly manufactured
look at your life and how you live. you have the illusion of freedom, but you do everything they want you to. you have no choice.
work your slave jobs and support corruption with your tax money you shouldnt even have to pay.

again you fall into your perfectly woven web, categorizing yourself as a "right winger" and others as "liberals". you're a total idiot, and saying childish things like "WAH WAH WAH" and calling people names doesn't get you anywhere. then again I wouldn't be surprised if you're a cop... so that would be fitting for you.
in fact I hope you are a cop. lol then you'd just be making an ass out of yourself.
speaking of schizophrenic, some of the other posts on here were logged with the same IP address... so you must be one of those people who accuses others of being what you are... or a bully.
I'm not going to call you names though, especially not those which exploit the mentally ill. and you can contact Seattle Weekly and see if all of us are the same people, they'll confirm we are not.
you are delusional and I wouldn't be surprised again if you are a cop or a social engineer helping the media convince people of their lies.
good luck officer, you lose. again.
at least I got you mad. also I don't have a mother, I lived on the streets growing up and now I'm a successful investor. but thank you for your comments, it only fuels the fire.
you also spelled schizophrenic wrong. and even if I were a schizophrenic, your findings don't point to such a mental illness. maybe you should go back to school, kid. what are you, a rookie? sounds to me like you have the typical wannabe right wing cop insecurity syndrome.
just to make you happy, I'll say I am schizophrenic, live with my mom, and whine on the internet like you.

The ultimate irony, Ron, is that you have 99.9% of the same DNA as the cop your "brother" murdered. Oh, but you'd never know by reading your posts. That 0.1% makes all the difference for you. If you truly don't subscribe to racism -- that is, the belief that one's characteristics are chiefly determined by race -- then you should be able to see that you're taking some pleasure in predicting that future, unborn human beings (read that again: _human beings_) will feel some measure of pain. All because others with the same skin color as you have had to experience it.
You may argue that you're not wishing anything upon anyone, and that you're just explaining how things will become. But it's hard not to read a little satisfaction into your words. TO EVERYONE HERE -- are all of you living in some alternate universe? While I do appreciate your consideration of my two previous posts above, 80% of the subsequent posts on this forum have simply followed some variation in support of (or in contention to) my primary thesis that essentially all whites are inherently racist. Worse, some of you have even copied my comments outright with only a few subtle changes (no doubt to avoid the charge of plagiarism). Good god people -- how about posting some original thoughts of your own?! Is vigorous, intelligent debate in America dead???
"Anonymous" / "Nobody" -- stop twisting what I said. Racism is racism, whether in the court room or on the streets. And despite your attempts to hide your identities, I caution you to be careful what you post to this forum -- each author's IP address is logged & associated to each posted comment. All that is needed to have access to seattleweekly.com's logs is a compelling reason and a simple court order (based on probable cause that a crime has been or will be committed). So check yourself -- or you'll find authorities rightfully paying you a little visit . . .
"SuperPelican" / "FYCM" -- instead of the two of you wasting everyone's time with your irrelevant comments, be men (for once) and back up your words with your real name and address. If you have a problem with the performance of a particular Seattle PD employee, I suggest that you both utilize the SPD website to state your complaint there. I'm sure Chief Diaz will be all too interested in your oh-so-important opinions.
"Talisman" -- a few posts up, "ZZ" and "john" basically accuse me of not being Black enough, to wit: "You don't have any dat, dis, dem, finna in your comments." My god, the racial ignorance on this board (which is a reflection of Seattle and America writ large) is astounding. Seriously, can you really blame me for looking forward to the cultural shift that is America's inevitable destiny? Mark my words, the day is coming when People of Color will live in harmony & prosperity while whites self-regulate themselves to the back burners of society. And like the frog in the pot that slowly comes to a boil, whites will never even recognize/realize this tectonic movement in the racial balance of power. So I ax you "Talisman", is dat enuf fo you to unna-stand me? Fo shizzel.

Obviously Ronald didn't read the whole article, if he would have he'd know that this criminal cop killer was an only child. If he was innocent he should NOT have pulled a gun on the officers, then run when it failed to go off. He then runs up a flight of stairs and points the gun again. This time though he's met with return fire! Props to the officers who loaded him up with lead! Maybe us tax payers won't have such a huge expense.

First of all you people bitching about the police that protect you are morons and deserve no serious response or credibility.
As for this suspect, he was stupid and deserves to now spend the rest of his life in prison if not get a death sentence. But in a way I feel sorry for this guy because he is the story of so many students and graduates struggling to survive right now. This guy had a higher education and was unemployed. Educated people trying to get themselves into the work force are facing serious problems. There are no new jobs and especially jobs for new graduates. This man was having to take odd jobs to support himself despite deserving much better. Its humiliating and disheartening.
Many people face what they feel are hopeless situations and some may be angry. Some people in his situation may not even care about their futures anymore. Not saying this is why or is an excuse for what he did, but it may help explain his mindset.
The economy needs to be turned around and people who spend thousands of dollars to receive higher education and are successful at it should not be unemployed and struggling for years to find reasonable employment.

This man also wanted to make a difference and was even volunteering at juvenile hall to do so. I think the way this mans career was going combined with recent police fines could have contributed to him snapping. The thing I wonder is if this man could have found a reasonable career contributing to society and making a difference as he wanted to whther it would have made a difference, saving an officers life, and saving the ruining of his own life. I think this could be a tale of people struggling and losing hope.
On a side note Washington does have a death penalty and murder of a cop is for sure one of the crimes deserving of it. However Washington's death penalty seems to be much a joke and not a serious penalty as in Texas or Virginia.

Elizabeth, I had the same thoughts as I continued reading some of the comments. Why does a conversation online get so off course and people start talking about another's race, calling names and bringing up incidents that have nothing to do with the fact that an officer is dead and the alleged shooter is fighting for his life? A wife lost her husband and their children lost a father. On the other end, a mother is praying that her only child survives (as is his brother). Whatever the outcome, I would think none of us would want this to happen to us, regardless of our race or political affiliation.

"conntry" -- thanks for taking all of us to task with your sage commentary concerning the state of race relations . . . Look, you're probably a good person at heart, but in your attempt to "calm" the racial rhetoric on this board, you have instead come across as a pandering race-baiter. The racial tension on this board is palpable enough already, so please don't add to it by trying to remind me (slyly through innuendo of course) of the white man's supposed "superiority" in diplomacy. I want people to stop making the sweeping, racist generalizations.
"Affirmative Action" is ILLEGAL in the State of Washington and has not been practiced since the inception of I-200. Secondly, this nut-job would have been a nut-job regardless of where he went to school.
And if he were not qualified to go to the UW, he would not have performed well while there, as all accounts say he did.
Do ethnic minorities call out racism when it isn't appropriate? Yes! But those instances are far outweighed by the number of correct calls they make, and by the number of correct calls they COULD make if they wanted to.
There's a reason people all over the world (including many White Europeans) hate White Americans, and it's NOT jealousy. When will you wake up and smell the coffee?
And, clearly many of you do not know what you are talking about. Though controversial, "jury nullification", which Monfort subscribed to, was not odd at all. The tenets of the theory fall in line with those of some of the greatest, and most debated socioeconomic and political theories in the world, including those of Neitzche and Marx, and it supports ALL ACCUSED PEOPLE.
Jury nullification takes judicial lawmaking (the process by which judges essentially make law by handing down everyday decisions that are subject to stare decisis) a step further and asks that juries consider the possible defects of a law that has been broken be4fore convicting someone of breaking it. It does not advocate a free pass for anyone...let alone anyone "guilty" or Black.
What it does ask juries to do is engage in constructivist thinking, where they make sense of the cases for themselves, based on the realities of the contexts in which the crimes were committed. For example, should someone be convicted of running a red light at 2:00 A.M. on a street that is all but deserted simply because the city is too lazy to pay to switch the lights to four way stops between certain hours? Everyone on this board knows what it's like to wait for five minutes at 2:00 in the morning on an empty street, knowing full well that, if you ran the light, no one would be harmed or even notice it.
Jury nullification would consider the city's culpability for not designing the traffic stop in a more logistical manner., and thus, potentially acquit the accused of running the light.
Though I believe he was a bright, talented guy, he clearly lost his marbles somewhere along the line. But that doesn't mean he was wrong about everything he believed. He was wrong for damaging property and killing.
That has to make sense to everyone here.

I pray for you in your time of hardship, and hope that you are able to find the strength and courage to deal with whatever the outcome may be.
The Brenton Family: I am so terribly sorry for your loss! No one deserves the pain and suffering you are enduring, no matter the circumstance. I pray for you, and for your lost loved-one.
Everyone else: Now is not the time to be pointing fingers and throwing hateful words around at each other! An innocent man, who dedicated his life to helping our community (whether you agree with his tactics or not, that was his intention) was brutally shot and killed! Now is a time for us as a community to come together, not to fall apart because of anger and frustration. It's sad to read so many postings that are well written - and obviously added by intelligent and educated people - but are full of such childish banter. What is the point of saying something that is meant to intentionally hurt another? But I suspect that the shoe will be on the proverbial other foot, and you'll be sitting there scratching your head about how your brave new world fell to pieces.

Ronald, you love your brother and that is understandable. However, if he has done something wrong you should acknowledge that as well. My husband is a black officer raised in the South and works with others with similar backgrounds. They would NOT railroad someone. That is your grief twisting things, and if not, then it is your ignorance. And to say that they would try to frame someone for Officer Brenton's murder? That could be said to be racist against our brave men and women in blue. Believe me when I say they want the person responsible for his murder. PERIOD. They will accept NO substitutes. A number of these officers were in the military and fought bravely for you and their country and now they are fighting for you and their city. They leave their loved ones at home alone night after night to keep you safe. They miss holidays with their loved ones to deal with drunken domestic situations when other families don't even want to be near each other. They risk illness, disease, debilitating injury and death to keep you safe. They have shorter lifespans than the average person and they don't even get continued medical coverage when they retire. Once they retire, they are forgotten. I understand your grief just as you should understand the grief that the family of police is going through right now along with the majority of the civilians out there. Are they all paragons of virtue? No, they are human like the rest of us and make mistakes like the rest of us. With all the crap we hand them though, I think we could forgive them a lot easier than we can forgive someone who runs from the police, pulls out a gun and when cornered tries to shoot the police. That in itself is unforgiveable PERIOD. Then there is the fact that he had a plethora of bomb-making equipment in his apartment? This is not a good law-abiding citizen. Doing volunteer work does not make up for any of that. I believe both of those things are facts. Now if the evidence shows that he murdered Officer Brenton, then he deserves what he gets...black or white (I believe he is both?) or red or green. Bad is bad. You don't want him to be convicted before he is tried and yet you try to blame the police for framing him with no proof but misplaced hate in your heart. Put the blame where it belongs as much as it may hurt. My heart goes out to you and his mother as you are not your brother but as the wife of a police officer, I had to go through the fear that it could continue, and happen to my husband or friends, I have absolutely no sympathy for your brother, sorry. For those who use the race card? There will be no equality while there are those who seek more than others in order to equalize the playing field. To those who blame the police for giving them a hard time? That is just a fraction of the crap you are giving them. Concentrate on living a good clean life and you will be amazed at how little you see them.
To Tim Brenton - thank you, you are a hero and will be missed. To the Brenton family - words cannot express the sorrow at your loss. To all the men and women who watch over us as we sleep, thank you and bless you! You are all heros and if you got Tim's murderer - yes there is a God!

D.W.P. says:
When I was 10 years old me and two neighborhood boys were having problems and I chased them to their house. Their dad was a Washington State patrol officer. he gathered us up and said to settle our differences we would all go in the back yard and me and the largest of his two sons would fight and he would referee it. When we got into the back yard he said "Hit it" and we got to fighting, me being the better fighter I was winning and all the sudden this Washington State patrol officer grabbed me from behind and lifted me over his head and slammed me to the ground with so much force I almost lost consciousness, as soon as I got my breath and was not in so much shock I jumped up and ran home... When I was 12 years old two SPD officers stopped me and a 13 year old friend because they said we looked "suspicious". When my friend said that he knew that we had rights the one cop punched him very hard in the stomach, when I proclaimed very loudly for him to stop the other cop hit me in the stomach so hard it lifted me off the ground... Later when I was 16 I was working a summer job at camp Bonneville army barracks down by Vancouver Washington. Their was 7 or 8 other juveniles working their for the summer. Slowly the N.C.O.I.C. Sgt. Thrasher and 2 other sergeants one was named Webb began separating me from the others, having me do jobs away from the other kids. One day I was in Sgt. Thrashers office and I noticed a dart board that had a picture of the Shaw of Iran on it full of darts, I recall thinking that it seemed odd. One day he asked me if I would stay after work and help him set up a new solo flex machine after assuring me that he would make sure that I got a ride home I agreed. When the other kids left Sgt. Thrasher the other younger Sgt. that had a pock marked face and blonde hair and myself all walked up to Sgt. Thrashers house which was right inside the main gate. I went into the sunken living room and began to open the big box that the solo flex machine was in. As I was doing this I noticed a lady cooking in the kitchen, as Sgt. Thrasher went in there and got three beers out of the refrigerator. He came back into the living room and handed me a can of beer, they had been giving me beer for about two weeks at this point. He seen that I noticed the lady in the kitchen and he said to me "That is (Name not remembered) she is my wife, I brought her back from Vietnam and I hate her guts..." I thought that I had heard him wrong and at this point I began to become somewhat alarmed... As I was putting the solo flex together Sgt. Thrasher was questioning me about my racial views, I was just trying to say what ever I thought that they wanted to hear... Shortly there after the other Sgt. left the room and returned a minute or so later with a full K.K.K. robe and hood that was on a hanger along with a stack of literature... I was now scared out of my mind and trying my best to not let it show... I hurried to finish putting the solo flex together so I could get out of there... During this his wife had cooked a dinner, some sort of fish and she brought that in to us... When I was finished Sgt. Thrasher said that he would drive me home, we all 3 got into Sgt. Thrashers car... Sgt. Thrasher was driving and I was in the drivers side back seat and the other Sgt. was in the passenger seat... He stopped at this little road side bar between the barracks and where I lived, we all 3 went inside, they both were wearing army camo fatigues with their names on them... We sat at a table and right away the bartender and my eyes met, I was only 16... he walked up to us and asked to see my I.D. when I told him I did not have any Sgt. Thrasher said to him "I bet you didnt card that nigger over there" pointing to a black man seated at the bar... We all stood up and walked out of the bar, we got back into his car in the same seating... He drove to the I-205 over pass and told the other Sgt. to take me with him and he told me to go with the other Sgt. He opened the trunk and removed stray paint cans... I followed him down into the tunnel afraid and scared not knowing what else to do... He began painting swatikas, showing me how to make the lines, I didnt even know what a swastika was then... He painted a bunch of racial remarks and then we ran back to the car... Sgt. Thrasher drove to the monument for a Russian pilot that flew a plane from Russia to here, its on the Washington side of the Columbia river, Sgt. Thrasher and the other Sgt. got sledge hammers and paint out of the truck and they defaced the monument, I never got out of the car, at this point I was traumatized... They both got back in the car and when Sgt. Thrasher began to drive he looked at me in the rear view mirror and when our eyes met I thought I was looking at the devil... He said to me "Do you know where any black people live in Vancouver?" Not knowing what to do I said "Yes, I do" He asked for directions to the house and I told him not knowing what was going to happen... The next thing I knew we were in front of the house and they both got out of the car carrying a sledge hammer and spray paint, I sat in the backseat of the car watching what they were doing, they painted swastikas on the cars in the drive way and on the living room window, when I seen them paint "Nigger go home" I lost it and I began to scream and I jumped out of the car screaming for them to stop... They ran to the car and as they were halfway there I seen the living room shade open up and whoever it was seen me standing there under the glow of the spot light, when Sgt. Thrasher and the other Sgt. got back to the car we all 3 jumped in and took off, Sgt. Thrasher looked at me in the rear view mirror driving to where my house was on Millplane in Vancouver, he said to me that if I EVER told anyone about this that they would hunt me and my family down and kill us... Then they dropped me off a block from where I lived... What they did not know is that house was my pregnant black girlfriends house... When I got home I was out of my mind with fear and confusion... That job was through the CETA Program that was in Washington State for disadvantaged youth... The next day I went and seen my CETA placement person and they transferred me to a job in Parks and Recreation with a female that taught me how to smoke pot and wanted to have sex with me... I slowly drifted off into a world of drugs running from the fear and shame and confusion of that one night... I never seen my girlfriend again after that night, I left that town shortly there after and have been running in one way or another ever since... I would like to find legal counsel that would be willing to help me right this very, very tragic wrong that has been done to me... I was a ward of the state at that time and it was them and the Army that put me in that position and did that to me when I was just a juvenile... I am sure there are police reports from that night although I was never contacted by the police, maybe they didnt see me? I know that there are ways to corroborate everything that I am saying and I swear that everything I have written is 100% true... Please if you know of any attorney or maybe you are one please contact me at diggerdonp@gmail.com
Thank you...

Well then, why is it that a black man has a 92% chance of getting killed by a FELLOW black man if you all are so united. You kill eachother just becasue they have a freakin different colored bandana in their pocket, you kill each other just because they live on a different block. You have easier access to college than any ethnic group in the world, yet you rank second to last behind the Indians in going to college....much less graduating. However, the black man is gonna rule the world......right after he rules the city block he lives on. You're a loser and a retard.

Christopher Bingham says:
Jury nullification is neither radical or new. It's at the root of why the jury system was started in the first place, in English common law.
A jury is in place to not only decide the facts of the case, but also on whether the law should be brought to bear as punishment. In fact, other states *require* the judge to advise the jury about this aspect of their role.
With the vast amount of uneducated Americans that serve as rubber stamps for the prosecution, it's no wonder judges and presecutors want to present jury nullification as "radical."
Sometimes it means that bad people get let go. The alternative is to let the law go as far as it wants with a lot more innocent people in jail.

Ronald Taylor says:
I've taken more time to analyze these comments that have come from people who I believe are speaking from their emotions. I'm sorry that these emotional people have not taken the time to analyze what I wrote. I would have been happy to discuss or debate the issues that I've written, yet I was disappointed by the reactions of these people. Like I said before, America was built on sound principles that came from an oppressed people (the protestants escaping persecution in England). I believe the emotional people that have been writing on this blog are Western European. Their ancestors were being oppressed by the Queen of England. They were given an opportunity to leave their oppressor and go to the New World. Wow. Based upon their prior experiences they created the Constitution of the United States of America. Also, they created the Bill of Rights. Hmmm, don't forget the Miranda Law. Let's stick to the facts.
Christopher has not seen a lawyer in five days. He has not been charged with a crime in five days. Yet, he is being held without bail or an arraignment. His family cannot speak to him nor can they speak to a physician at the hospital about his medical condition (?!), hmmm. Do you believe the founding fathers considered this jurisprudence?
Now, I know some of you emotional people believe that I need some special consideration when competing for employment, education, or any cultural refinements. I've traveled the world and have been educated in private schools during my life. My parents, between them, have seven degrees from major universities. My grandmother got her master's degree when she was sixty. My great-grandfather went to Westpoint and served with Teddy Roosevelt. (I don't believe they had affirmative action back then.)
Anyways, I am a history buff. The facts are once again, if the laws are unjust there is no way a country will last. This country was built on the backs of slaves. In 1865 African-Americans were emancipated. In 2008, we elected the first African-American President. We've come a long way, and I believe as a country we can do more. There are a lot of good people out there that come from Western European descent, and I believe they understand what I am trying to convey.
Chris is an American. He deserves his rights just the same as anyone else that is an American. If they can do this to Chris, without concern for following the law, who is next? Maybe after all the "African-Americans" are thrown in prison, maybe they'll go after the Hispanics? Then the Asians? And last but not least, the people of Western European descent? The law is to protect us. It's not a political tactic or strategy to disenfranchise any one particular group of people. Equality for all.
And for those emotional people that believe that I come from a welfare mother and a no good father, because I'm African-American, I'm sorry to burst your bubble.
(Side note: There are more European descent people on welfare than any group in the United States. There are 44 million African-Americans. 20% of those people are on welfare - 8.8 million people. European descent Americans total around 200 million. 18% of those people are on welfare - or 36 million people. Just thought you would like to know.)
I want a fair, unbiased trial for Chris by a group of his peers, without being tainted by outlandish claims without jurisprudence. (In this newspaper they've shown critical evidence without an attorney being able to refute it, or to even have discovery in a court of law?) That is very scary. If he has committed this terrible crime of killing an innocent man who was protecting the community, I will acknowledge the travesty and irony. I am only questioning the modus operandi of the police department.
May God bless the family of the fallen officer. May God bless those that are ignorant and cannot see, nor understand the words that have been written here today. Thank you for your time.

He looks like a decent guy... but seriously, bombs in his house? I don't know about you, but I just don't have bombs lying around my house. Bullet hole in his UNIQUE car? Ballistic match to his gun? He pulled out a gun when police showed up at his house? I don't think it's a race case- it's an evidence case.

I believe that our justice system is capable of being fair and honest if put to good use. However, I am not so naive as to say that there is no room for mistakes, personal judgments, even racism. The truth is all of us in the public only know what has been reported and the only thing that has been reported are police statements. We have not heard both sides of anything.
This man is in the hospital, he cannot speak. I think our justice system is so wonderful because people are presumed innocent. What a strong and bold statement. A defendant has rights, as a human being, to be unequivocally proven guilty before he is treated as such. His family has a divine right to know his medical condition and correspond with him. That right, under the law, should be afforded to him and his family.
Otherwise this Democracy we love so much, this system that we claim is not racist and truly is fair, is not doing what it claims to do. If the prosecutors have a strong case against him then they should not be unafraid of allowing lawyers and family to contact the SUSPECT.
If you believe our justice system is good, then allow it to do its good work…fairly. And that includes acknowledging that defendants DO have rights.

Mr Taylor,
I don't have a lot of time here. Being an educated man yourself, you should know many of the comments your makingm are here say. I may not be as educated as you are, but the facts are that your supposed step-brother tried to shoot at police. Witnesses saw this with their own eyes. Does that not prove to you there is some psychological problems with him and that he committed a crime alone just doing that? If he tried to shoot at police, is there any way possible he gunned down a police officer the night of October 31, 2009? The fact that he tried shooting at police officers will put him in jail for some time. Obviously Mr. Monfort has some seriously problems. Mr. Taylor, this has nothing to do with race... This has to do with justice being served. Your supposed step-brother pulled a gun on cops. That's not a very educated thing to do.

Hey Ron, I'm sure you're a real smarty pants and all private schooly and very fancy indeed. However, it appears that you may also be suffering from a serious case of avoidance and denial. Your brother has a mountain full of evidence facing him. I agree that if he wishes to see an attorney he should be granted that very fundamental of civil rights. Sadly, the evidence appears to be overwhelming at this point i.e. DNA, car match, bullet match, frankly you may also find out about an eye witness or two.All very large obstacles for even the craftiest of lawyers. He also appears to have a huge persecution complex and has been unable to come to grips with his inability to hold down the most menial of jobs. Forget about law school or LAPD, it seems that he was not even able to pull it together enough to be a security guard, or a private eye. It seems that you are reluctant to actually address any of the apparent facts of the case building before him. What gives?

Ronald, you're condeming all the people on this post for saying they're personal belief of how guilty he is. So how is it, it's OK for you to say he is innocent, based on the same evidence. As you mentioned in an earlier post "if you weren't there to witness a crime, then how can you say he is guilty? Well Ronald, if you weren't there either, then how can you say he is innocent? You mention the constitution and other history facts, but one of those so called rights it the freedom of speech. Soooo, if these people want to make a so-called uneducated decision, as you put it, based on eye witness's, DNA, evidence, and actually catching the piece of human trash as he pointed a gun not once, but twice. Then I guess you and Reyshaun are right, we are stupid, you two are right, and one day your kind will be running your so-called White America and everything will be all right. Guess we can be like the New-New Orleans, we can have a Chocolate America, after all, New Orleans no longer has crime and drug problems any more, huh?

Ronald,
Seriously the race card? They have a picture of the car at the scene, a bullet hole in the car, bomb materials in his apartment and he decided to pull out a gun while police were trying to question him. Please enlighten me as to how any of that has to do with race? I think it is more "taking responsibility for your actions." He strait up acted a fool and seriously may be going through some mental issues. That is still no excuse if he did do it (which evidence that has been found it looking as though he did.) No one forced him to pull out a gun when being confronted by law enforcement. There was not white officer standing there demanding from him to pull out a weapon just so they could shoot him. HE did what he did. He IS guilty of pulling out a weapon on police. And as for him wanting to take part in the military... God help us if that every were to happen. We don't need another Ft. Hood attack because some guy is pissed off for one reason or another and decides "let me take matters into my own hands and shoot people."

I don't understand how all of this became what it is, as far as the continual race and political bashing...OR how this became a forum for attacking SPD!?
I'd Like to point out that TUKQUILA POLICE were there, on scene, when this guy was shot. I don't know who fired at him, I believe it was 3 seperate law enforcment officers.
I have grown up in Seattle, and never moved far from it. My WHOLE family lives in Seattle. Not one of us has any crazy or derogatory things to say about SPD, because we are law-abiding citizens.
If I were the officer's widow, and I was reading this, I would be outraged! To blanket Statememnt an ENTIRE Police Force as corrupt, or to say they are all PERFECT, would be just as bad as what some others are saying here about white or black people, as a whole.
I cannot believe that some people still feel that one race is ABOVE the other, or that all WHITE people feel one way about blacks and other minority groups. it's pathetic. Each person has a right to believe what the want, but in this city of Seattle, you'd really have to walk around with your eyes closed to believe that it is not a well integrated, accepting, and LIBERAL place. I love that I grew up in such a place that has SO much culture, and celebrates it SO WELL. There's a huge deaf community here as wwell, and I was lucky enough to be a part of that, and did you know that the deaf community has had to continue fighting for equality, too, just like the rest of us? EVERYONE HAS TO FIGHT. It's SINK OR SWIM no matter what color, sex, orientation you are. Those of us that swim, have to keep swimming, no matter how tired we are. The great thing about seattle is that around here, there is usually someone to reach out to if you start sinking, and they can HELP.
I personally think mister Monfort was sinking, and didn't want help. I may be wrong...
I understand he worked a a security officer. I'm a security officer, and while the job might seem nothing more than a joke to a lot of people (it was to me before I started working at the refinery I do) but it can be stressful and dangerous, depending where you work. The company I work for is actually VERY difficult to become employed with, and I'm curious if anyone knows what company, and what clients he may have worked for?
Please stop and think about what you feel TRUTH is... This is not a Media hype, or an accidental police shooting...TRUTH is that there is someone dead, 2 more injured and someone is responsible.
There is no trigger guard based on race. a WHITE GUY held me and his son hostage at gunpoint. A WHITE GUY raped me. I'm WHITE. I've never been assaulted by a black person. I think this guy did it.

Jim says:
"Chris has not seen a lawyer in five days."
Perhaps his being shot in the head and in critical condition makes this an inconvenient time to speak with an attorney? Assuming, of course, he can speak.
"It is a fact that racism is genetically and environmentally bred into whites."
And yet that cannot be a racist statement, because it is said about Whites rather than being said by Whites. Only Whites say racist things. When other race members say the exact same things, those things are not racist because they are not being said by a White. Follow? It is not racism, it is "reverse racism". It sort of works like "i" being an imaginary number in mathematics to make up for the fact that no square root can be a negative number. So we must imagine the number. In reality, a non-White cannot say something racist so we must imagine their if-said-by-a-White-they-would-be-racist phrases being such. So "reverse racism" is the imaginary number of racial discussions. Now you get it.
"Seriously the race card? They have a picture of the car at the scene, a bullet hole in the car, bomb materials in his apartment and he decided to pull out a gun while police were trying to question him."
Oh, wait.
The suspect IS half-White.
And the suspect WAS a police-wannabe. So I wonder why he is eligible for the Race Card for being half-Black rather than being condemned for being half-White.
Doesn't that make him half-racist? ;-)

Bombs in his apartment. Weapons and bombs in his car. Booby trapped apartment. Touch DNA retrieved from an American flag left at the maintenance lot. Touch DNA on a flag dropped near the corner of Yesler and 29th. A traffic stop just two blocks from the scene of the shooting at which Monfort was hostile from the moment he was stopped. Video of a car matching his car, or which there are less than twenty in Washington State. He chose to cover the car beginning just after the murder. A bullet from Officer Sweeny's weapon penetrated Monfort's car.
We don't need to get any further than those facts to see why a judge bound him over. If you don't want to believe that he pointed a handgun and a police sargeant's face and pulled the trigger on amisfire, don't. I believe the detectives, but you need not. But the facts above are more than enough evidence to connect him to these crimes. So let's all leave the assailant's race out of it, and look at the facts.

Although, i do not agree with the killing of anyone. I applaud the actions of MR. MONFORT. The police have been beating, maiming, and lieing on police reports ever since the beginning of the seattle police department. We in the poor sections of the seattle community have been victims for far too long. We live in a police state, we have no rights and are subject to a beating if we invoke our rights. I love police work, it is a necessity. I have NEVER met a cop who was not CROOKED. I say that and support that with the following. If an officer, who voluntarily swore an oath to obey and enforce the laws of the constitution and the laws of washington state, witnesses a fellow officer committing a crime, that officer would not arrest that officer, nor tell the truth on a police report. What people fail to realize is that cops are HUMANS also and therefore subject to fallibility. Pinning on a badge does not make one above the law. Unfortunately, we in the poor sections recieve alot of rogue thug cops who love to beat, maim, torture, and murder those they fear. People call them hero's cowards run in packs, birds of a feather flock together. there are more rogue thug cops than one may think. These cops are no different than a street gang. They protect the rich and serve the poor. My belief is that MR. MONFORT was turned away from the police force because he posed a threat, not to the community, but to the police force itself. I think MR. MONFORT would have exposed them for who they really are. No matter what happens to MR. MONFORT I stand with him in understanding why he did what he did. LONG LIVE HIS LEGACY I SALUTE HIM MUCH RESPECT

Does Ronald Taylor, the first commenter, really think that a several police departments got together to frame an innocent guy for no other reason than his race and his marginal success and possible further success?
Did the police stage the murder just to do this to one man? Did they make all this up, plant all the evidence, spend millions of dollars just to frame this one guy? Seriously?
You are a seriously screwed up guy Ronald. Are there not African American CEOs, Millionaires, even billionaires? Are there not even a few African American placed rather highly in our federal government? Why both with all the expense and effort to frame this one guy?
Don't worry, Washington will never execute him regardless of the sentence. If he recovers from his wounds he'll be giving the commencement address at Evergreen State University in 4 or 5 years.

I am not speculating beyond that but to say that if you don't think people get framed in this country you are all crazy. Watch Witchhunt. We live in times that we NEED to be questioning things, not just take everything at face value. Allowing others to think for us is why this country is in it's current state of craphood.

Gee, with all the dangerous items in his apartment, and then to just go on a rampage and try to shoot peace officers as they come to only question you...I'd think he does have something to hid- for now he allegedly did it. His dream was to wear the badge of the well respected LAPD? Please he could not qualify as a pimple on a Hell's Angel's ars! What made him think he could be a peace officer? Innocent people are growing tired of being preyed on by predatory pieces of soulless crap who don't know how to act like civilized humans. The excuses, brainwashing and leftist lies are wearing thin for more and more of us. I used to be a leftist/liberal, then reality woke me up. Unfortunately the truth not only hurts, it kills. Those who want respect need to realize that respect isn't something you can just demand, like picking up a phone and ordering a pizza. You need to be respectable. News flash - that means acting respectibly.
"Ooh, it's not his fault he's a scumbag killer, it's the white devil, it's the legacy of slavery... ooh racism, o-o-ooh the holocaust..." Yawn. Death to scum.

John says:
I can't help but to notice all the racial tension. It's a shame we can't get a statement from a non-racist black man. The fact that the world will be ran by minorities is a statement of their ignorance and their ability to breed like rabbits. The majority of black people are born into poverty, not by their own doing, but that of their parents. This dilemma then creates hatred because they are led to believe that the white man is why they are poor. Anyone watch "First 48?" If it's not a black man being killed by another black man, it's a white or hispanic being killed by a black guy. All of this is caused by said drug territory or debt owed. If these said black people are to rule the world in time, this does not say much on their intelligence. I must ask; if someone owes you money, and you want said money, are you going to collect said money after you kill them? This is being acted out on TV for all races to see. Jails are predominately occupied by black males, and this is brought on by white people? Do white people make black people commit crime. Rob, rape, pillage, murder, assault, and steal cars? Of course we do. And the white cops who arrest said perpetrators are racist for doing their job. I think Mr. Monfort is racist for murdering a white cop. What do you think of that? Monfort is a racist against all, even his own kind. Here's a thought, if your a black man and thinking about committing a crime, don't do it. Next is racial profiling. Every race has a stereotype that is lived out everyday on "COPS." A black guy riding a bike, most likely has some kind of drugs on them. A white driving a Bronco and not wearing a shirt, most likely has meth on him and the Bronco is stolen. It's all relative. Stop committing crimes and you will stop being arrested. I know, I know, shocking revelation. If you can't look past a person's skin color, there is no hope for any of us.....
Brought to you by a concerned white guy. Everyone needs to listen to Bob Marley and smoke a joint. Everything will be fine in the end brothers and sisters.
