Former Governor Mike Lowry on Mike Huckabee: "I Sympathize"
Former Washington Governor Mike Lowry says he's fortunate never to have been in the same position as Mike Huckabee, the then-Arkansas governor who granted clemency to Maurice Clemmons, a man accused of murdering four Lakewood police officers. In a conversation yesterday, the one-term governor admitted he couldn't quite comprehend commuting the sentences of over 1,000 convicts as Huckabee did during his 10-year run.
Former Washington Governor Mike Lowry says he's thankful a commutation he made never came back to haunt him like Mike Huckabee's.
"That's such a high number," he said. "Things must be different in Arkansas."
But as someone who also wielded the power to grant freedom with the sweep of his pen, Lowry says he understands the weight of responsibility.
"I don't know the real history," said Lowry. "But I sympathize on how that mistake could've been made. If there's ever such a thing as 20/20 hindsight, (Clemmons' case) would be an example of that."
