Mike Huckabee Says the Time Isn't Right to Contact Families of Maurice Clemmons' Victims

Huckabee says he doesn't think now is an appropriate time to reach out to the families.
Former Arkansas Governor and possible 2012 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee gets the Q&A treatment from this Sunday's New York Times Magazine.

On top of finding out what he thinks makes for the best Christmas presents for kids (music) and whether or not he's read Sarah Palin's ghostwritten memoir (he hasn't), Huckabee also says he hasn't yet contacted the families of the officers slain by Maurice Clemmons, the man whose sentence he commuted.

Have you contacted the families of the slain officers to express your condolences?

I want to in the appropriate time, but now it's not the appropriate time. To do something for my sake would be selfish and boorish, and I don't think there's anything that I can say to them now that would make them say: "Oh, that's great, I'm so glad. That really solves it for me."

Huckabee's right. There's nothing he can say that will make everything all right for people who've just lost their father, wife, brother or son.

But it's almost Christmas. And if Huckabee can find the time to hawk his new book (presumably about what a great time Christmas is for reflection, forgiveness and all that), couldn't he at least find the time to pick up the phone, too?
