Bible School Teacher Scott Spies Accused of Having Sex With 16-Year-Old Student

• May God bless you with the ability to seek truth. And to know the difference between what you desire to be true and what reality is. It does no one any good to enable a sickness. If you love or respect Mr Spies you will help him overcome his problem, not deny he need help. He is not all bad, but he does have a problem. For him to become healthy he first must become accountable for his mistakes, and stop blaming others. He told me stories as well and I am not all that sure now that he was telling me the whole truth. I know he places blame on others for what he has become and what he does. This is all so sad.....

• he was married.....to me. It was one of the worst experiences of my life! I am sick that he hasn't changed.........no one would have believed me because I am his "ex". But this is exactly what I would have expected. He has a side not many know about.

• This was not a surprise to many students, if anything there were several people going around saying "I told you so". many suspected there was something going on between the student and him, the girl is just as much to blame as him, she was seeking out sexual attention from anyone that would give it to her. this is something the schools staff should have picked up on, however, they didn't. why they continued to let the student stay at the school beats me.

• ...I want to add something that is very important for people to know as FACT: people who have been doing thing's like this to student's, little league, boy scout's, summer camp's, and on and on ARE MOSTLY ALL MARRIED PEOPLE WITH CHILDREN OF THEIR OWN. Not "single old men". Btw, 49 ain't that old. And, in recent year's, adult women have been committing this crime more and more. In other word's their number's are on the rise.

• This happened when I was at AAA only it was reversed. The employee of the Academy was female and the student was male. The faculty member was not charged, not arrested, and she was married at the time.

• AAA is a good school. What happened is not just the young girls fault, it is also Scott Spies. He is the adult and should have known better. Its really sad what happened. But also not shocking. I went to AAA last year and its is extremely easy to get off campus without anyone knowing and you can go with staff without permission. If it is during the day, nobody will even notice your gone or on weekends. The schools "leaving campus" policy needs to change!

• This is a very sad story. Sad for the girl & her family and sad for Auburn. Sad that Mr. Spies preyed on a teen - some mother's daughter she hoped was being protected at the academy. As a mother I trusted Christian teachers to lead my children uprightly. I didn't expect perfection but I can not even imagine what it would be like to trust and have that trust betrayed by a teacher. Many people know Mr. Spies as a good person. I went to school with him way back in the Kirkland days - but unfortunately, his record "way back when" doesn't do him a bit of good today. He is a mature adult who knows better. I pray the girl will heal in time and find what she needs in healthier ways. I pray she has a strong support system offering her exactly what she needs to be successful in life. So sad.

• Thanks Jeff for the info. I was trying to figure out who flyingdutchman is since those posts seem to indicate a past experience with Scott and a personal beef against him from something that happened in the past. Preliminary research led me to that particular name, but I have since discovered that it is incorrect and that flyingdutchman was actually a fellow student in college with Scott. I just wondered about it since in all this person's posts they don't just say they don't like what Scott did, there is an undercurrent there of something more and I wondered what they knew. I also went to college with Scott, but I didn't know him well and have only seen him a handful of times since then. This is a very sad situation indeed.

• The name doesn't sound familier to me. I knew pretty much all of the students that attended the academy from 95-2002. Unless they were in elementary grades.

• My name is Jeff Krein. I attented Puget Sound Adventist Academy from early 1995 until I graduated in 2002. Scott Spies had a truly significant & POSITIVE impact on my life as well as many of my classmates. I can't believe so many people that have no grounds to speak on the subject, (Namely "Anonymous" Posted On: Tuesday, Feb. 23 2010 @ 1:00AM) are taking this opportunity to bash the academy and it's teachers. I would like to ask you, Anonymous. What kind of "things like this" have you seen covered up before at PSAA? And, if "things like this" WERE in fact being covered up, why didn't you come forward and say something about it? I find it very hard to believe you know anything of any other incidents or "things like this" and just so happened to chose this particular post to say anything about it. Most of these people posting have no idea who Mr. Spies was, thus have no room to talk. I am more than confident, if all of you truly knew him, there would be no one saying he's a monster or a bad person in any way. Now, I am by no means saying what he did was right. However, it is not our job to judge. Scott Spies is a great man and I will always view him as such. He made a terrible decision, and he will suffer the consequences. All these people posting anonymous messages saying bad things about Scott and or the academy, why not post your name and back up what you wrote???

• allof you who are slamming the Adventist academies need to stop. God would not want you to do that. Is that what jesus would do? This man is human. Like all humans, he made a mistake. The law enforcment has to be brought into a situation like this. To protect all of us. And if PSAA is truly covering similar things up, why don't you report it to the highest level of authority. We need to pray for this an, the girl and her family, and all the students at the Acadamey.

• Anonymous Scott Spies friend, I do know what I'm talking about and it is galling for you to even suggest he isn't a predator. I know Scott, but he deserves to be in prison for this. I don't care how lonely he is.

• Oh and to all of these people on here who claim that PSAA would cover up a situation like this, you have no clue what in the world you are talking about. They have a new principal and board and all that now, but even more so before when we had our previous principal, there would have been EVERY step made to make sure the situation was corrected. I would really like to know if and when you went to PSAA because to me it sounds like you're an outside person who is just talking nonsense.

• The author of this article is disgusting! First of all don't quote the bible if you don't know where you're quoting from and even if you're quoting it correctly cuz that was wrong!!! And second, he is not a bad person or a monster like the media is making him out to be. The girl in this situation is just as much to blame as he is and should not be made out to be the victim! Mr. Spies was a kind, lonely man who put a lot of years into teaching and doing a good job, so before you start slandering his name, why don't you check your facts!

• Its not surprising that a single 49 y/o would do this. What is surprising is the fact that he is not married by now.. Schools should not hire single school teachers after a certain age...

• Just dissapointing. I know this man. it's one thing to hear about this happening to someone, it's something else when it happens to someone you know. Especialy if it is one of your former/current teachers. I knew him for many years and never would have expected this from him. My class as well as most classes knew him as a fun, nice guy. He was realy well known at BV for his casual pranks on other classrooms. But probably the thing he was realy known for was that train thing he did about every other year. He was a good friend of mine and now..... What has happend to our human friendship? I figured he only had four options while doing this: 1. Stop doing what he was doing and hope to stay out of trouble. 2. Quit job and leave. 3. Keep doing what he was doing. (his choice, wrong one). 4. Come forth about it. I would have recomend options 1,2, and 4 if I knew about what he was doing. It's just sad and terrible.

• I believe the school in Oregon had a sign out system...even if you were walking down to the little village store, or to the music building,etc...or to a teacher's residence. I also believe that most, if not all, of the staff were married...that doesn't mean things still could not have happened, but that these measures and procedures probably helped prevent inappropriate behavior. There were students who did end up in trouble, but not with any staff...with each other, and they snuck around to do what they did. My parents, while not practicing Christians, told us to always be aware of our surroundings, and made us comfortable about sharing anything we felt we needed to with them...it saved my sister & I both some grief!

• Auburn is a good school, with many fine teachers...I went to an SDA school in Oregon, many years ago, and nothing like this ever took place...students never went anywhere alone with staff, simple as that. Right now, I feel the most sorry for the girl, because she will need counseling. My guess is that she has not been feeling good about herself for a very long time, or this would not have happened. Predators do know who to pick. Be sure your sons and daughters know their value, and that they can tell you about anything going on their lives.

• Having attended three adventist academies (Mount Ellis, Upper Columbia, Auburn) I am not surprised in the least by what happened. What does literally shock me is that the school let law enforcement know. The system is drenched in secrecy and based on a theology that minimizes the authority of State government. They must have been under a great deal of pressure from either the girl's parents or members of the community.

• At least Auburn is doing something about it, if something like this happened at their sister school PSAA the council would just try to cover it up. How do I know? Because I've seen them cover things like this before, just so they could keep a good reputation, and get more people to come to their crap school and steal more money from people. Yup. All fact. Such good sincere Christian people huh?
