Kudos to PubliCola for unearthing what has to be the strangest name change application King County has ever gotten. Mr. Drug War's reason for the switch?

(Assumption Alert: I'm assuming no member of the fairer, and smarter, sex would dub herself "Fuck Censorship.")

@ David I agree with you on the point that he may just be using this as a ploy... lol I overlooked it too at first, but it makes sense. It does seem weird, the idea that there are words we are raised not to be allowed to say, but as long as that bringing-up still sticks with the generations, I believe it's still rather wrong that this guy from now on will be introducing himself as "Fuck" in public. I myself am not offended by this, it is simply the fact that it's inevitable that this dude's name is going to cause some sort of issues between him and kids' parents in the near future. @ Common Sense. I agree-- words need to keep some sort of significant contextual meaning, instead of just throwing them around, otherwise, you may as well say the sinking of the Titanic was "bad" instead of "tragic". @ Bryan How's about ya calm down, k? Goin' a bit extreme on the generalizations. Don't agree with the Europe part or the only people "caring for the civility of our nation", Michelle, but I'm sure you couldn't help what /who you grew up with. It's guys like Bryan that don't take that into consideration, thusly putting over-exaggerated labels on people that don't agree with him.
Anyone that has berated Mr War for engaging in a publicity stunt rather than trying to make an actual difference has overlooked the possibility that this is a very clever ploy. Anyone who open-mindedly researches the effects of current drug policy is likely to reach the conclusion that it causes more harm than good and is fundamentally unjust (I say that as a once-passionate prohibitionist myself who has 'converted' after looking into the subject more deeply). So one of the best things you can do is to encourage discussion. Now whenever this guy meets anyone, and is asked what he's called, he instantly has an opener into a conversation in which he can outline the evidence against the drug war. And those who are complaining about him having a swear-word in his name should probably take a minute to reflect on just how weird, how mind-warpingly irrational, is the idea that there are words you shouldn't be allowed to say (or shouldn't be allowed to say if you are a child). The offence caused by someone saying 'fuck' is entirely the choice of the offendee (unless it is part of a personal insult directed against you, but it's perfectly possible to express cutting insults without using swearwords). If we could only calm down about it, realise that it's just a pattern of sound associated with a range of meanings, then it would cease to have any inherent power to offend.
@ Michelle Are you some kind of bible-thumping neo-nazi who would disown and kick out one of your own children if they didn't behave according to YOUR misguided blueprint for how everyone should be? Nazi parents are common, especially in religious circles. Fact. Here's an idea, deport every American who doesn't even know the first thing about his or her constitution. I agree this guy's totally committed to drugs. That's evident just by looking at his handwriting! In Arizona you can change your to anything you want without any type of court process. You just start using your new name.

@ Common Sense At least there are two of us that care for the civility of our nation. Well, I'm glad that my kids can now have the possibly of calling one of their teachers "Mr. Fuck Robertson" And any of you people that think it's allright for kids to wander about flaunting words like that should get out of this country and move to Europe where they don't give a fuck.

This guy is from New Mexico and has had some court battles over change of names. Among his previous names: Fuck Censorship, Variable, and Snaphappy Fishsuit Mokiligon.
Um, Soli... Have you ever heard of the ACLU? NORML? Or, and I know, I'm going waaaay out on a limb here, but - stopthedrugwar.org? I'm sure they don't have volunteer "stations"(?)... just offices or hotlines where you can offer to help. But, yeah - I'm sure that's what you're gonna run right out and do. Don't be a fucking idiot. I abhor censorship and the drug war and all that... But re-naming oneself in this manner is 5% righteous protest and 95% sensationalist stupidity. Ya wanna do something about censorship, war, drug policy? Put down the pipe, and acually DO something. In the time it took to go to the office and file this petition, he could have done some volunteerwork. This person doesn't give a shit about anything but himself. What's he say if some little kid says, "Hi, I'm Billy - what's your name?" Respect the word "fuck". It's the most powerful one in the language. If you play with it carelessly, it may discharge acciddentally. And then you're fucked.

I was there in the court room getting MY name changed when he did this. He had tattoos that looked like it was done with markers all over him. No joke.

'Fuck' is just a word that has been made taboo by social contexts and, as taboo, can be used to vent or express strong emotions. There is linguistic precedent for curse words and expletives extending back much farther than 'fuck,' and they all serve this 'release valve' sort of purpose. Keeping children from using those words because they are 'inappropriate' ignores the underlying mechanics of how humans express ourselves.
Just because he is petitioning for a name change, doesnt mean he will get it.
and @ Kay Lee I didn't say he was worthless, only that I believe he went about his compassion the wrong way. I'm suggesting that this almost seems like a passive "just doing this to get my point across" action to take against something he really believes in.
I'm personally not offended by it, I guess try to lean toward more political-correctness. What my actual point was, it just seems like too much of a publicity stunt. And @ Adam, would it be ok for your kids to say fuck in general context? I don't know about anyone else, but I was raised to believe that words like that were inappropriate for young kids to say. And let's face it, kids get more impressionable, just because they're exposed to so much during childhood. What it all boils down to, is that people just don't care and only desire to do whatever they want. And nothing good could ever come from that.
Those of us who stand up for what we believe, do it any way we can. Michele is making a hasty generalization. To say a person is worthless who chooses this method is narrow-minded and judgmental... But, I respect her right to say it. Thank the founding fathers for the 1st Amendment.
@Adam (@Michelle) Agreed with Adam. We're adults, it wouldn't matter if the word was Frak or Frigg or Fudge, people still know what you're saying even if you're using juvnile euphemisms to "mask" it. Michelle is offended by a word, while the war on drugs is misallocating resources and putting kids in jail.
I tried to change my middle name to "Fucking" (in Seattle, King County, even), but the judge refused to allow it, on the basis that he couldn't let me offend everyone I met. Judges can refuse any name change at their discretion, but apparently what offends one judge may not offend another. Maybe I should go back and try again.

@Michelle Fuck is just another word in our dictionary. It's uses are as varied as the people that use the world. No it isn't essential to our language as often it is used to replace other words. You taking offense to it though is a personal choice, and one that many people do not share. Fuck is a form of expression and I appreciate having it there the same as any other words. Appropriateness of the usage of word should be it's context, not the word itself. I could say that I fucking love you, fucking replacing the word "really" in this case. Would you be offended if I "Fucking" love you? Civility gets nothing done. Doesn't our government prove that daily?

Sooooo he decides to "take a stand" by making his name start with f***? Really? That's not necessarily bravery nor compassion for what he believes in, it's miscommunicated hatred toward something he knows he can't control. The world would be a better place if more people with his "bravery and compassion" could take a stand for their beliefs in a more civilized manner. Otherwise, the government just won't give a damn.
Why, I've never heard of a false fact before. I fully support Mr. Fuck the Drug War. What I don't support, are Americans who think you need to have an "American" name. I'd like to change my name to ReadTheFucking Constitution.

Anybody who changes his name to that really is addicted and has little or no contribution to society. He relegates himself to manual labor with a silly name like that.
