At Costco, $800 Buys You a Year's Worth of Food for the Inevitable End-Times

• My old buddy Jim Weber once said to me that after the electricity goes out and all the wonder bread is gone the folks in Seattle would be eating each other within days. From what I see when I visit and what I read here it appears that he will be proven correct.

• To Ben who says you'd rather starve than eat the stuff... once upon a time I got pretty hungry and I was in a situation with limited food. I found a little piece of a dried up orange peel. Holy smokes was I thrilled!!!! Hunger is the best sauce. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. P.S. it would be nice if Costco would sell smaller sizes of things in general.

• Some people buy emergency supplies... there have been many emergency supply scammers selling way overpriced stuff and ripping people off. Kudos that a big chain is now offering a reasonable product at a fair price which hopefully will put those crooks out of business. This is a rare case where I will advocate for the big chain putting the little guys out of business. Bravo!!

• Great! They can use it after the Tea Party takes over Congress and institutes its economic policies. Having known several survivalists, I imagine most of them are just praying for the day, so they can act out their little Chuck Norris hero fantasies. Grow up America. We're a country, not a fucking game show.

• Perhaps you've never made wheat bread. Hard winter wheat is best for baking bread.

• I used to know a Mormon lady, and she'd double stock her entire garage all the time. She was sure they government was going to come in and declare Marshall Law. She'd have loved this item.

• Don't see why you should catch hell...I can't think of a reason why not to have some emergency food stocked. It wouldn't take much of a natural disaster to keep trucks from reaching stores, and once that happens you've got a lot of hungry people.

• It's a good thing Costco also offers coffins. You can buy them both and know you'll be taken care of either way.

• I bet the people of New Orleans would disagree with your assessment of the need for this type of product.

• I think they meant "Hard White Winter Wheat".

• "Hard white winter wheat," not meat. I'm still not sure what that is, but it sounds slightly less revolting. There doesn't appear to be any meat at all in this thing, I guess so that it will appeal to the survivalist militia/vegetarian crowd.

• Actually most of it tastes pretty good. Especially the corn and the fruits. In this day and age of employment uncertainty, it makes sense to keep a long term supply of food around to ensure your family is fed. I know that some viewpoints might seem extreme but if you have the cash everybody should really consider an emergency food supply. You should not knock something if you have not even tasted it, you really should do some journalistic work and research the product before you knock it

• Probably tastes yucky. I would rather strarve than eat this crap.
