• every new plane has to go through this test. you should get your facts before you post anything on a public platform. this is coming from a pilot.

• The article and video are OK but the title is totally misleading. NOWHERE in the video does the tail of the plane touch the runway. It looks like they installed some extra gear for this TEST FLIGHT to keep that from happening. There is a lot of vitriol being posted to this article because people don't like being lied to or manipulated into reading/watching "news" by a misleading headline. Stop it.

• "Ignorant, incompetent, or sensationalist." Which word describes the author of this article? It could be that he was outmanned after watching the interview with that test pilot. That dude handled the heavy jet with grace and delicateness like the Weekly Reader blogger does when he is trying to find his own vajayjay.

• Tenga: these are not stunts, but normal flying that every pilot learns through hundreds of hours of flying with an instructor. They are just doing these types of tests on the plans so when you get a pilot that didn't listen to the instructor very carefully you have a less likely chance of getting killed.

• These comments about a "plane". Man, I miss all the old commenters..... THAT is a 787 dreamliner. That TEST is conducted for every aircraft the FAA has allowed to be sold in this country. It's the minimum takeoff speed test. The tail will "fly" before the wing (that is, it will fly at lower air speed) so the pilot can rotate the nose up at a lower speed than when the wing will lift the aircraft. Then the wing has a high angle of attach (incidence) and will lift the aircraft at the lowest speed possible.

• Apparently lightly dragging the tail on the ground during takeoff was an intentional test they had to do. This was not accidental and has nothing to do with why the plane has been delayed so much.

• I missed a flight by 10 minutes in Japan years ago. I tried to get onto the runway to get them to let me on because I was that late for work. It never took off, breaking almost in half and killing many people.

This happens to be a velocity minimum unstick test or VMU, where pilots carefully drag the 787's tail on the runway to determine the lowest speed needed to leave the ground. This is and was a required test you moron.
