Randy and Evi Quaid Win Their Extradition Fight, Can Stay in "Star Whacker"-Free Canada

When we last left our intrepid batshit-crazy Hollywood refugees Randy and Evi Quaid, they were ranting about vengeful celebrities and performing rock songs about Tinseltown "Star Whackers." Of course all that craziness was against the backdrop of the very serious legal fight the couple had mounted against being extradited out of Vancouver, B.C., and into the jaws of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney, who still has a bone to pick with them about some felony vandalism and house-squatting charges.

That fight, it would now appear, is over.

Los Angeles Times:

The Santa Barbara County district attorney's office says its request to seek the extradition of actor Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi Quaid, from Canada to face felony vandalism charges has been denied.

It would seem that the charges the Quaids skipped out on weren't worth the Department of Justice's time in pursuing extradition.

According to a statement put out by the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office, the reason for the denial was the "resource intensive and lengthy process involved in seeking extradition from Canada."

Also: "Extradition is generally reserved for more serious offenses than that which the Quaids have been charged."

Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter tells Seattle Weekly that there's not much to be done about a Justice Department that's not willing to break a sweat over bringing the scofflaws back to justice.

But God forbid they set foot in American again.

"[The DOJ's decision] exhausts the remedies available to my office to return the Quaids to this jurisdiction," says Carter. "But the warrants remain out on this case and should they return they will be arrested."
