Weed Finder Works: Now THAT's A Smart Phone App

A smart phone and the $1.99 Weed Finder app can get this delivered to your door... for $300 an ounce.

​While in Seattle on a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, I decided to try out a nifty little Android app, Weed Finder, which I'd recently bought for my smart phone. The $1.99 app finds the nearest medical-marijuana dispensaries and displays them on a map, with cool little pot leaves marking each location.

Despite a certain propensity to crash--at least on my Samsung Transform--Weed Finder worked, as in, it found me weed. The second place I tried from among the nearest choices was the medical-marijuana collective/delivery service Medcan, which serves patients in King County.

A call to Medcan Delivery's number got directed to voice mail, but my message was quickly returned by owner/delivery guy Jeff, who directed me to Medcan's easy-to-use website, where I made my selections and placed my order.

Medcan's strains are uniformly priced at $45 an eighth, $85 a quarter, $160 a half, and $300 an ounce. Available varieties include Aussie Blues, Butterscotch, LA Woman, Orange Crush, Shiva Skunk, UW Woman, Blue Dream, and Romulan.

The order was immediately confirmed via e-mail, and Jeff showed up at a Queen Anne apartment exactly when he said he would, a little over an hour later. After checking my medical-marijuana authorization and Washington I.D., he had me fill out the forms to join Medcan and make my donation.

Despite frequent crashes, the Weed Finder smart phone application completed its mission: It found weed.

​Not only was Jeff punctual, he was also professional, discreet, and courteous, bringing the cannabis in plastic medicine bottles along with an itemized receipt for my selections. I have to say I loved having the printed receipt listing the strain names and amounts as a handy reference, especially since short-term memory can be something of an occupational challenge for a marijuana critic.

I decided to have two "Women" at once, sativa-dominant hybrid UW Woman ("a very popular but mysterious strain from the University of Washington bud family," according to Medcan's website) and indica-dominant hybrid LA Woman (Martian Mean Green x LA Confidential). Upon inspecting the buds, I was immediately impressed with the quality of the medicine itself and the care which had been taken in handling it. These were beautiful, trichome-covered flowers in pristine condition. Such attention to detail makes a real difference.

The crystal-covered buds of UW Woman smelled spicy, with the barest hint of cinnamon. Almost immediately, stress relief and relaxation became the first noticeable effects, not surprising in a sativa dominant, but these were followed by pain relief, bespeaking the indica component of UW Woman's genetics.

The sticky-sweet LA Woman flowers have a robust and enjoyable flavor which lingers after the exhale, with stress and pain relief and muscle relaxation its greatest medicinal qualities. LA Woman's indica heritage comes through big-time. But the indica heaviness is alleviated by the uplifting presence of Martian Mean Green genetics, a potent sativa combining Sharksbreath x G13 Haze.

Besides its dried flowers, Medcan can also deliver medicated cookies (four chocolate-chip-walnut cookies for $16, or five chocolate-chip for $20) and truffles (five for $20). Pressed hash is available for $20 a gram.
