Comment of the Week: 'Trying to Make a Buck Off Stoners'

This week I reviewed Seattle Weekly "Toke Signals" columnist Steve Elliott's new book The Little Black Book of Marijuana.

It's a fine piece of literature that everyone should buy two of.

Anyhow, one commenter seems to think that Elliott is a jerk for potentially making money from a book concerning cannabis.

Sorry Charlie writes:

Steve Elliott trying to make a buck of stoners, yet again. Nothing to see here, move along.

I could write a million rebuttals to SC's misguided missive--like how "making a buck" off anyone by selling them a book is one of the most honest ways that one can "make a buck"--but I'll let Mr. Elliott himself put it in his words.

Funny how in every other field of human endeavor, folks are "just making a living," but if you're in the marijuana business, even as a journalist, you're "trying to make a buck of [sic] stoners"...

How about this plan, "Sorry Charlie": I won't bother you at the Unemployment Office while you get your money, and you don't bother me while I earn mine.

Sorry Charlie gets a thorough and well-deserved dressing down by other Daily Weekly readers. And for that we thank them.

The point is: Just because someone works in a field as enjoyable as cannabis consumption doesn't make them shady or dishonest. It simply makes them a little more clever (and probably a lot poorer) than the schleps working nine-to-five office jobs.

As Elliott says:

"I don't profit from cannabis being illegal -- I profit from cannabis being wonderful."
