Theresa Mejia, Kidnapping Suspect, Tries to Escape Police Station Through Ceiling, Falls Into Chief's Office Instead

Burlington police Detective-Sergeant Bob Wischhusen has never seen the movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

If he had, the incident that happened recently at the police station he works in might have been even more hilarious.

It seems that Burlington police officers brought in a 23-year-old kidnapping and robbery suspect named Theresa Mejia for questioning. And after putting the woman in an interrogation room, the cops left her alone for a few minutes while they filed her paperwork and prepared for the interview.

But when the officers went back into the room, Mejia was gone and a ceiling tile was askew.

The suspect didn't stay gone for long, however, as she soon came crashing through the ceiling right into Police Chief Bill Van Wieringen's office.

"We did a search for her through the department and found her in the chief's office," Wischhusen tells Seattle Weekly today. "She'd traveled virtually the length of the building. Theoretically she could have escaped, but it's doubtful."

Since the incident, the Burlington City Council has approved emergency funding so that the police station can reoutfit its ceiling so that fewer dumbasses are able to sneak around in it.

Mejia, meanwhile, is facing additional charges of felony malicious mischief and attempted escape.

"I've been here 22 years and I've never seen anything like this," Wischhusen says. "I think it was a good indicator that we needed to fix the ceiling."

Now here's Kumar showing a slightly luckier outcome of an air duct escape.

And for a more thorough examination of the technique, we turn to the Mythbusters.
