Wait, Amanda Knox Is Guilty? U.K.'s Daily Mail Makes Major Gaffe With Post-Verdict Story
In the world's most-watched verdict since the Casey Anthony trial, Amanda Knox was exonerated today.
But not according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, which apparently made a major flub by posting a story that said Knox was found guilty.
It included details that could not possibly have happened, saying Knox "looked stunned" as the guilty verdict was read.
"As Knox realized the enormity of what judge Hellman was saying she sank into her chair sobbing uncontrollably while her family and friends hugged each other in tears," the story said.
Someone jumped the gun. Most news outlets had two versions of the same story ready to run - one if Knox was acquitted, and the other if her appeal was rejected. The Daily Mail ran both. Here's another tidbit from the story:
Following the verdict Knox and Sollecito were taken out of court escorted by prison guards and into a waiting van which took her back to her cell at Capanne jail near Perugia and him to Terni jail, 60 miles away. Both will be put on a suicide watch for the next few days as psychological assessments are made on each of them but this is usual practice for long term prisoners.
The article included a timeline. For today, it read: "Knox and Sollecito's appeal is rejected and they are sent back to prison."
The paper has already removed the errant article, which was up for about 30 minutes. Oops!
