• Oh how little you know Olaf. Every morning, I wake up in absolutel agony. It takes me a half hour just to be able to take a step without severe spasms and pain. It is so bad, that without the cannabis, I would not be able to function at all. My only other option is extreme opiates. As a matter of fact, that very option nearly ended my life 2 years ago. Your idea of appropriate medicine for me sounds like that very thing. Well let me fill you in on the life of someone that has to take extreme amounts of methadone, oh and 18 other medications as well, all with unpleasant side effects. You lose your entire life. You really cannot be around friends or family much, you barely eat, something basic as taking a crap is an hour long ordeal that may or may not work, you can no longer think, your boss cannot trust your decisions, oh, and your body is being poisoned with every pill you pop, bringing you that much closer to death. Now, let me fill you in on the life of a medical cannabis patient. I no longer have to take any of those 19 medications. I live a normal life, where my family and friends actually have me around. When I am out and about, I don't have to worry about going into severe convulsions at the drop of the hat. I go to work every day, and my boss now LOVES me. I think clearly, I eat regularly once again, and I sleep 4-5 hours a night instead of 2-3 (believe me, something like that is HUGE). Without cannabis, I was a drag on society, and would have likely spent another 5 years at best taking those pills before dying, all the while trapped on public assistance because I could not work. With cannabis, I am a productive, peaceful member of society that has been able to reach out to other severely ill veterans, and show them options. Oh, and by the way, on all those pills, I weighed 340Lbs and was gaining fast, even though I did not eat often. Since my doctor's recommended cannabis for me, I am under 230LBS, with my blood pressurre going from 180/130 to 120/84. Obviously, something must be helpful with the plant. I would recommend you do alot of research about cannabis. You might not like to find out that you have been horribly lied to your entire life, but you need to wake up.

• Yeah I guess all the doctors and scientists are wrong and you and the feds are right! The Institute of Medicine report in 1999 affirmed that marijuana and its constituents possessed numerous therapeutic properties, including the ability to control pain, nausea, and anxiety, and to stimulate appetite. Thats only one of literally thousands of reports. The medical benefits are numerous and could even help you someday. Why don't you study for a little and learn some real facts instead of continuing your ignorance at the expense of people dying and in pain. You say you are for legalization, but then say its fake despite many proven benefits.  Look up the proven medical benefits of marijuana. Listen to some real people that have MS, cancer, aids, etc. Check out the Harvard study showing THC killing cancer cells. Tell me why do cells have more cannabanoid receptors than any other receptors in your body? Probably so they can get high, nothing medical about it right? You can google and find numerous federal, state and private studies proving its medical benefits. Here is just one quote directly from the American Cancer Society. It took me less than a minute to find this. American Cancer Society: "The cannabinoid drug THC has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in relieving nausea and vomiting and increasing appetite in people with cancer and AIDS. Testing of other marijuana extracts is still in the early stages. Results are mixed in studies of marijuana use for muscle tremors and spasticity in people with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease."

• Oh thank god he was allowed to keep the medicine for his (I'm sure) debilitating medical condition. What is it... Chronic fatigue? Compound ennui? Polyps? I'm all for legalizing it up front, but this medical marijuana bull is such hypocrisy.You're like 19th century drunks who claim their whiskey is "medicinal."

• @duncac - this guy wasn't taken to jail, the authority just recorded the contents then gave it back to him and let him go.  This is the future right here and the level headed TSA agents in charge on that shift made the correct move. 

• Yeah,  what happens if you land in someplace stuck in the past like Florida where they still put you to prison?  Maybe if I was flying from Seatac to Maine or someplace I might do it but not if I was landing in Little Rock!

• my feeling exactly..those people who are so vehemently opposed to MMJ should just get over it...there are so many more important things for society to focus on. Just let it be.

• If they allow prescription medication through checkpoints then it only makes sense to allow medical marijuana through. It's someone's medicine.

• The difference in the two examples is State law, not TSA policy. The Feds simply do not prosecute cases of petty possession. TSA policy is to turn anyone caught with pot over to the local authorities, precisely  as they did here, as well as in the Indianapolis incident mentioned. The Indianapolis Airport Police showed remarkable compassion in their exercise of discretion in choosing to simply confiscating that patient's medicine instead of taking her to jail. Yes Seattle, they take you to jail if you're caught with pot and arrested in Indiana. My only question is whether they destroyed the evidence all at once, or one little bit at a time. The woman in Indianapolis may have been confused because she wasn't hassled when she flew to Indianapolis from California. It's been a long time since the TSA in Oakland and San Francisco even called the local authorities. There's not much point when the inevitable response is "...and exactly what do you expect us to do about this?"
