• When I first saw the headline, being Seattle, I had assumed that he was shot by Seattle police for jogging.

• Agreed. It sucks he got hit, no doubt but you CANNOT work in public safety, EMS, or Emergency Medicine without having a crazy sense of humor and talking shit. You just cannot. You will last one day. I am sure it's hard to imagine if you are an accountant or other office bot, but it's impossible to see bad shit happening to people for 12 hours a day, without venting and making dumb Beavis & Butthead jokes. If you think your doctor doesn't do it, you are high as a kite.

• Just another Seattle Weekly article comprised of few facts and a lot of attitude.  Nothing about how the accident happened other than "...got hit by a semi truck...." and I can think of more than one way that statement could be true.  In some respects, the Seattle Weakly article is just as disagreeable and distasteful as the comments from the SPD are, and for the same reasons.  Curtis?  "Thick accent"?  You can't even report coherently on the accused driver?  If you ask me, that's a euphemism for bigotry because if you were in Saudi Arabia, they might accuse you of having a "thin accent".  Huh?  Huh?  You should get over yourself and lose your attempt at writing a "cute", biased, article and simply report on all the facts relating to the incident. The cops involved may be bigoted, insensitive, smart asses whose brains are still mired in the 8th grade, but you haven't pole vaulted yourself any higher by resorting to yellow journalism.

When I worked with the new orleans pd they made this look like nothing. the officers weren't saying it directly to this soft little guy and people talk like this and even if he gets an apology they will still talk this way. Now they will just look at him as even more of a pansy a$$ in west seattle.

• How was this above the law.  It is obvious that this was a private conversation that was recorded and released without thier consent.  I would be willing to bet that you run your mouth about others and do not expect it to be released to everyone.  Get over it.

• This is unfortunately NOT uncommon. Cops like to enjoy the idea that they are above the law and they often view regular civilians in this way. I say take these 2 assholes badges and make an example out of them for future cops to remember! Totally common and totally unexceptable!

• Freedom of speech doesn't protect your employment. I can show up to work and spew vitriol at my boss (as long as it doesn't cross the line to assault or slander or whatever.) And then he can fire me. And nobody's right have been violated. It's fine for the cops to say what they want, but it would also be fine for the department to set some basic standards for decorum and respect and say, if you feel like exercising your right to speak outside those standards, we'll exercise our right to say, "Don't let the door hit'cha where the Good Lord split'cha..."

• I love it when cops respond to criticism but saying, "Just wait until you have an accident and need a cop."  Fact is, we never need cops.  Cops are what we avoid.  It would be better to fire the whole lot of them.

• All of you bashing the Seattle PD need to remember that your freedom of speech is what allows you to say what you want, when you want to. That's great. That's also the same right the police officer's have...to say what they want. You don't have to like it. It's their right to say it. Was it politically correct? Probably not, but people need to get over themselves. Everyone wants to be able to say whatever they want, like Mel who uses an extremely derogetory term refering to the police when she comments below "Fucking pigs, we need to occupy the SPD". Mel can say that but yet she's mad about things the police say? Quit being hypocrites. And occupy something else like the PD? Do something useful instead of sitting around bitching and whining that you're not getting enough freebie handouts. Get educated, get a job and get a life.

• Mr. Average Cop is at less risk of getting involved in a shootout than Mr. Average Citizen. Mr. Average Cop calls for backup and gets it, Mr. Average Cop is armed and dangerous. Mr. Average Citizen cries for help and just gets found in an apartment somewhere, bled out on the floor. If you're a criminal (admittedly not a profession with high recruitment standards) what's easier, B&E in a suburb somewhere or running up against an armed cop.  Running up against an armed cop, you KNOW he's got a gun, years of aiming it and pulling the trigger. The smart ones just let themselves get cuffed, the dumb ones run for it and get on the next episode of Cops. B&E is fraught with danger. Maybe the guy's got a gun. Maybe he even knows how to use it. Its all these uncertainties... Remember, you're not dealing with the sharpest knife in the drawer, the uncertainty looms LARGE. Scared people make mistakes.

• Ever wonder why the cops in your neighborhood are getting more thuggish and dumber than they need to be? Salaries are dropping and the quality of recruits is dropping right along with them. Even at that, Lt. Pyke's salary is over $100k/y, and most of your cops would love to get that much legally. But, Lt Pyke has lowered the bar for every body. Now the 12,400 Über-rich are making sure that we get protection that can't match theirs. Our cops will be beating US up while their cops will be beating US and OUR COPS up. Their private force WILL be authorized to use deadly force.

• A public apology made directly to both the driver and the jogger in front of a crowd with cameras rolling. Suspended without pay  or made to do cross walk duty for a year. The second officer was probably in training, which shows no responsibility, someone that is weak minded to follow the crowd and clearly not capable of doing a job that requires restraint, intelligence and selflessness.

• Wow, and I am waiting to hear a callback from this agency about a job. Perhaps I am better off staying in IT here in NY, than being in PD there in Seattle. They don't seem to get respect, and rightfully so.

• How was calling a critically injured man a dumb fuck being professional???? So if it was you in that position, would you have called them professional then? I think not.

• Yeah, they were being assholes, but you know what?    People dealing with wrecks and injured or shattered humans tend to develope a morbid sense of humor, or go insane.    Stupid of them to joke in front of the guy, but I'd bet that the EMTs on this accident had a few not fit for public consumption jokes too

• The problem is that when your job description includes a risk of taking gunfire and the guarantee of having to fight with unruly citizens with some frequency, the pool of willing candidates gets whittled down to a point where most applicants are Type A jerk-offs ready to "crack some skulls." 

• Cops who need to blow off steam in this way shouldn't be protecting the public. This kind of attitude warrants a job at Best Buy, not the police force.  We should demand individuals who are genuinely committed to helping people be public safety officers, pay them more, and create a more rigorous, psycological weeding out and training program for police in general.  

• What steam?  Were they distraught by the incident?  Had they just risked their lives and needed to vent? No, I don't think so.  If you can be that much of a jerk when you think no one is paying attention, I find it hard to believe that the same attitude doesn't show up when "dealing with the public". "Who cares?", you ask?  You will when it's your turn to be treated like you did something wrong by cops who feel superior to you as a civillian.
