It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a whole lot of manpower, equipment and de-icer to deal with the kind of snow and ice storm that brought Seattle to its knees last week. The prevailing conventional wisdom has long viewed the city as rather whimpish when coping with a major onslaught of snow, but a lot of people might not realize the enormous mobilization it takes to handle it. Now, to the numbers....

According to the Seattle Department of Transportation, these are some of facts of what went into the battling our recent snow war:

* 55,353 gallons of salt brine (most of it spread before the first flakes descended and then reapplied after the snow fell).
* 3,373 tons of rock salt (used as a de-icer).
* 946 miles of snow routes in Seattle were covered.
* 47,000 winter storm brochures distributed.
* 30 snowplows (the city's entire supply).
* 4 flush trucks, (used to apply salt brine and street cleaning).
* 5,015 labor hours.
* 3,941 vehicle hours used (total number of hours spent driving the equipment).

It's really not possible to make any comparisons with the snowstorm of 2009, says DOT spokesman Rick Sheridan, since rock salt and salt brine were neither used nor available.
