Tim Lincecum, the Pride of Belltown, Doesn't Mind Taking It One Contract Year At a Time With SF Giants

So what's up with Tim Lincecum? Well, it so happens the "The Freak" is about to cash in big on a one-year arbitration deal. He wants $21.5 million and the San Francisco Giants have countered with $17 million -- which breaks the record for most money sought and offered in arbitration for a player not yet eligible for free agency. Just splitting the difference will surely be enough to keep food on the table at that 2,400-square-foot Belltown condo of his on the 28th floor of the Escala.

Lincecum, the one-time standout at Liberty Senior High School in Renton and strikeout king at the UW, is fine with arbitration. That's because Timmy, unlike every other professional athlete on Earth, has no problem with one-year deals. If the arm goes, well, so be it. He's still got two more Cy Young Awards than 99.9 percent of the baseball pitching world will ever have.

Asked about defying conventional wisdom of seeking the security of a multi-year contract, Lincecum tells San Francisco Chronicle baseball columnist Bruce Jenkins, "I just don't know how I'm going to feel five years from now."

This is the kind of sentiment that strikes fear into Giants fans. How many more 1-0 and 2-1 losses will Lincecum endure from the National League's worst-hitting team last year?
