A Word About the NY Times' Sunday Story on UW's Decision to Increase Foreign Students at the Expense of Washington Residents

​I don't want to get all Pat Buchanan here, but Sunday's New York Times Page One story on how foreign students, the Chinese in particular, are going to the head of the admissions acceptance line so poor old UW can make ends meet, nets at least a 9 on my infuriation scale.

​Okay, now we get it. Susan Enfield's puzzling decision to drop out of contention for the permanent position of Seattle Schools superintendent--without having another job offer-- suddenly makes sense. It looks like she's on the inside track for another superintendency right across the lake.

​Revenue shortfalls, spending cuts, and the general rotten state of the economy are hindering virtually every sector of our once-upon-a-time Great Society, with schools continuing to be one of the biggest casualties. According to a study by the National School Board Association, an estimated 100 school districts in 17 states have been forced to slice one day out of the school week. Most of those districts (largely rural) are in Kentucky, Colorado and New Mexico.
