Familiar Issues As Maryland Follows Washington, Becomes Eighth State to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

On Thursday Maryland became the eighth state to legalize same-sex marriage as Governor Martin O'Malley signed the bill into law. The Governor, once a supporter of civil unions instead of marriage, by last summer was saying "I have concluded that discriminating against individuals based on their sexual orientation in the context of civil marital rights is unjust." Now opponents are preparing a referendum and are obsessing over its wording before the November election.

UPDATE: The Westboro Baptist Church may not picket the funeral of Charlie and Braden Powell after all. In a call to the syndicated radio program The Bobby D Show on Friday morning, church member Fred Phelps Jr. indicated that the church may not show up to the Saturday memorial if the show aired an interview with church members.
Phelps later tweeted, "Washington trip now cancelled."

Washington's gay-marriage measure should clear its final hurdle this afternoon when the state House votes on the legislation, SB 6239, which the Senate passed 28-21 a week ago. What gives today's session a little extra spice is a proposed amendment to exempt religiously affiliated schools like Gonzaga and Seattle University from having to accommodate gay weddings in their chapels.

A three-member panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has just ruled that California's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. The federal court said the state cannot prevent gay couples from marrying just because a majority of voters said so. The 2-1 decision is a huge victory for gay-rights advocates. The ruling comes just as Washington is poised to become the seventh state in the union to allow same-sex marriage.
