State Liquor Store Bidding Already Nearing Half a Million Dollars Just Days into Auction

Initiative 1183's passage last year means Washington has to get out of the liquor business and put all of its state-run liquor stores on the auction block. Bidding for the stores just started last Thursday and is growing at a furious pace.

For the past two years researchers have been scutinizing the drinking behavior of 95 chronically homeless alcoholics who have been living at a subsidized apartment building at 1811 Eastlake Avenue. This is a place, ever since it opened its doors in 2005, fraught with controversy. Wary neighborhoods have never been terribly excited about the social experiment of housing some of the city's most incorrigible drunks -- then allowing them to drink on the premises.

A gay news blogger has gone to war with self-proclaimed Christian cartoonist, Joe King, over his new 2012 wall calendar that reads: "I'm Not Gay, I'm Just a Sissy." The calendar, which has been yanked at Barnes & Noble but is still available at Amazon.com, features a big drawing of King all dolled up like a sissy and promises "12 months of Sexual Confusion. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)."
