To say it was a big day in Seattle journalism would be an understatement. Monday was a huge day, with the announcement that The Stranger's Eli Sanders had taken home a Pulitzer in feature writing for his piece, "The Bravest Woman in Seattle," and the Seattle Times' Michael J. Berens and Ken Armstrong were awarded a Pulitzer for investigative reporting for their three-part series "Methadone and the Politics of Pain."

Seattle School Board Moves to Censor Student Newspapers

Categories: Newspapers, Rants

UPDATE: The Seattle School Board has (wisely) just announced that it will abandon the plan to censor student newspapers, saying that it's important that schools "uphold our practice of trusting our teachers to educate our students on the rights and responsibilities that come with freedom of expression and a free press."

David Boardman: Seattle Times Executive Editor and Karaoke Master?

Categories: Newspapers, Whimsy

david boardman01.jpg
We have it on good authority that Seattle Times Executive Editor David Boardman was at a bar called Recessions in downtown Washington, D.C., on Friday night, where he delivered what's being described as a "pretty awesome" karaoke rendition of Bob Marley's iconic track "No Woman, No Cry."

Seattle Weekly Karaoke Korrespondent Jeff Roman analyzes the implications.

Tony Overman, Olympian Photojournalist, Disciplined for Lying About Giving Anarchist Crime Photos to Police

Categories: Newspapers

tony overman01.jpg
Last month we told you about a group of anarchists who vandalized the house and vehicle of veteran Olympian photojournalist Tony Overman. The as-yet-unidentified vandals spray-painted the word "snitch" on the photog's truck, sprayed an anarchist symbol on his garage, and slashed his truck's tires. The "snitch" reference was supposedly because Overman had shared photographs he took of anarchists breaking the law with police--an accusation Overman vehemently denied.

Turns out it was Overman who wasn't telling the truth.

Comment of the Week: Why Writer Jonathan Kaminsky Quoted "Fuck" in a Post, but Not the "N-Word"

swear-word01.jpg
This week a reader took issue with staff writer Jonathan Kaminsky's using the word "fuck" in a post (in a direct quote), but using "n*****" to reference the word "nigger" (also in a direct quote).

Why did he do this? Would other writers do the same?

I asked.

Ben Schroeter Gives New Meaning to Being Banned by The Seattle Times

Categories: Media, Newspapers

ben shroeter01.jpg
Ben Schroeter slanging M's programs.
Ben Schroeter says "I know I'm a pain in the ass." The large, curly-haired Mariners program-seller is as relentless a political gadfly as was ever hatched in the festering pools of hippie activists. His weapons are usually his words, which he will gladly give to anyone with ears or write on any website that has a text-field for comments.

Our friends over at The Seattle Times know him well--mainly because they've banned him nearly a dozen times from commenting on their message boards for breaking rules involving insults and tone. But what happens when a known undesirable like Schroeter makes it into an actual Times article as a source? Turns out that banned means banned.

Why the "Sexy Weed Nurse" on Last Week's Seattle Weekly Cover Was No Slight Against Nurses

weed nurse01.jpg
To roll out our new medical-marijuana column, "Toke Signals," which features pot connoisseur Steve Elliott traipsing around the state critiquing pot and pot dispensaries, we needed a eye-grabbing cover image. Elliott is a bit balding, a tad portly, and not what we in the biz call "cover material" (I say that with all the love in the world, Steve). So instead of festooning our cover with his bearded likeness, we went the other way, with a "sexy weed nurse" who'd be a bit easier on the eyes. This offended a real nurse. We'd like to talk about it.

Seattle Times to Ditch 81-Year Headquarters for Rented Space

SeattleTimeshq01.jpg
For 81 years The Seattle Times has been headquartered at the sprawling, gray-pillared complex at Fairview Avenue North and John Street in South Lake Union. But by the end of this year, the company will be renting a building it once owned just southwest of it, on Denny Way.
