Update, 2/9/12: Charles Garcia has been suspended for five games without pay for "violating the terms of the NBA D-League's anti-drug policy." Team spokesperson Brett Hansen could not confirm what substance Garcia was suspended for. Garcia will begin serving his suspension tomorrow night, when the Skyforce play the Idaho Stampede.

Original piece, published 1/24/12: Former Seattle University basketball star Charles Garcia had a trying 2010-2011 season, to put it mildly. He left school a year early, only to go undrafted before pinballing around pro stints in Turkey, Mexico and the NBA's Development League. But this year he's found his footing, enjoying a standout season with the NBDAL's Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Shaq funny face 150x120.jpg
When the University of Washington landed top-ranked football recruit Shaq Thompson last week, Husky head coach Steve Sarkisian gleefully declared it is "just awesome" that the hard-hitting safety from Sacramento opted to attend UW over California, Oregon, and other top-tier schools. Even more awesome, though, is the fact that Thompson is one of several Shaqs who will play in the NCAA next year, exactly 18 years after Shaquille O'Neal left the college ranks to play in the NBA.

Mayor McGinn Looks to Hit a Long Jumper to Bring Back the NBA and Perhaps Save Himself

NBA-Basketball1.jpg
Author and basketball nut Sherman Alexie pondered recently what it would it mean for the city's psyche to bring back an NBA franchise. "The thing is, if we get a team," he wrote on Sonicsgate, the official site of the 2009 documentary on how Seattle lost its team, "it's going to be somebody else's team. It's not going to be a new franchise. I keep up, so I know who's in trouble. We could get New Orleans, Milwaukee, Indiana, Memphis, Sacramento." Alexie continued:

Sixty-year-old retired Indian horseman Mike Harry seemed much the dreamer last year when he told us for our cover story on the Omak Stampede's World Famous Suicide Race that he plans to return to the saddle for the bone-breaking downhill event this year. Then again, a cover story on one of his fellow Colville tribal riders published in SW's sister paper Miami NewTimes this week, must give old Mike some encouragement.

A record number of San Francisco 49er fans -- all of them great Americans -- were tossed out of Candlestick Park during Sunday's showdown against the victorious New York Giants. A total of 110 Niners boosters were ejected from the 'Stick, where the sale of booze was cutoff at half-time.

Tim Lincecum, the Pride of Belltown, Doesn't Mind Taking It One Contract Year At a Time With SF Giants

Categories: Sports

So what's up with Tim Lincecum? Well, it so happens the "The Freak" is about to cash in big on a one-year arbitration deal. He wants $21.5 million and the San Francisco Giants have countered with $17 million -- which breaks the record for most money sought and offered in arbitration for a player not yet eligible for free agency. Just splitting the difference will surely be enough to keep food on the table at that 2,400-square-foot Belltown condo of his on the 28th floor of the Escala.

Edgar Martinez Gets Just 36.5 Percent of Hall of Fame Vote

Categories: Sports

Mr. Mariner.jpg
It was another rough outing for Edgar Martinez, who finished yesterday with a meager 36.5 percent of Hall of Fame votes. The good news, though, is that the Seattle Mariner's most prolific DH did slightly better than last year when he scored just 32.9 percent of the vote. To get into baseball's most hallowed shrine, a player needs 75 percent from the Baseball Writers Association of America.
