The Gentle Waves
I'm not talking about Isobel Campbell's pre-Mark Lanegan days, nope, this post is about the gentle waves of sound that rippled through my brain while in a post-operative state this weekend.
Always a tricky one to deal with at Year End List time (the topic explored in Michael's post above), Kompakt's annual Pop Ambient compilation arrives right before the new year. And luckily I hadn't yet burned myself out on 2007 before getting my wisdom teeth taken out last Thursday. My recovery experience wasn't as awe-inspiring as some of my friends'--I'm envious of one who watched a lightning-filled thunderstorm while confined to bed--but the most blissful moments were spent under a slight narcotic sheen, with the frosty vibrations of Popnoname, Markus Guentner, Gas, Marsen Jules, Klimek, et al, ringing in my ears.
From my window, the snowy Olympics faded into the background, and the downtown skyscrapers turned golden against a navy blue sky while the final track, Andrew Thomas' "I Am Here Where Are You" shimmered and hummed. I think this is the best edition of the series yet, largely because of this particular song. Like a sustained-release tab of oxycodone, it's a masterpiece of peaceful suffusion and extended euphoric gratification.
