The Secret of the Cave Singers

Let's just say, the last time I felt the way I felt after seeing last night's Cave Singers show at the Crocodile Cafe was the first time I saw Band of Horses (still called Horses at that point, lineup in another incarnation) at the Showbox's tiny Green Room.  It was a magical show- the kind where you know you're witness to something special, mezmerized by material that soon should be embraced by many ears. But for that moment, it's feels as though it belongs only to you and a few other lucky folks.

Last night was like that. Set against a backdrop of twinkling Christmas lights, Cave Singers cast a spell with a set that included a guest appearance by PGMG's Andrea Zolo during "Called"- an eerie number where Pete Quirk's wailing vocals were complimented by Derek Fudesco's deeper rasp and punctuated by Zolo's raw, abrupt washboard rapping. "Free the Bee" displayed the Dylanesque qualities of Quirk's voice best, epitomized  with the lyrics "If it ain't me babe/It must me you".

His comfortable stage presence, filled with whimsical head tilting and bobbing, coupled with the down home song stylings gave the feeling that you'd happened upon a hoedown or hootenanny, or a real good jam session around a crackling campfire.

Comet tavern plays host to the boys next on January 19 after a brief tour down the coast.  See them now, while you can still feel like it's a secret of sorts- guaranteed, it won't be for long.
