The Show You'll Never Forget

ShowDaCapo.jpg I started this book over the weekend, The Show I'll Never Forget. It's a collection of 50 essays by 50 writers reliving their most memorable concertgoing experiences. The writers are diverse (Rick Moody, Harvey Pekar, Luc Sante, Susan Straight) as are the acts represented (Metric, Rush, the Lounge Lizards, PiL) The subject can get kind of tiresome, however, especially when writers deliver the old you-shoulda-been-there essay (yes, I know Springsteen must have been a sight in his prime). But a few do stand out from the pack, most notably local boy Charles R. Cross' meticulously researched account of Nirvana's "homecoming" show at the Paramount in 1991. Here, we find that not only did Nirvana put on a weak show, but that Kurt bought a pack of underwear at Nordstrom's before the show, and that he offered a limp-wristed handshake to Gene Stout when the P-I critic congratulated him after the show. It was a pretty engaging read. But how about y'all? Any of you have a show you'll never forget?
