When I Grow Up

When I was in school, in the weeks leading up to career day, we'd take a scantron test with absurd questions like "Do your socks usually match?" and "Beetles scare me" True or False. After the teacher ran them through the machine, the results we'd get back were supposed give us an inclination as to what we should pursue professionally when we grew up. 

 Most of the options we were presented with sounded like absolute crap. Fear of beetles apparently makes for a great window washer.  Those of us who rarely match socks are high on the candidate list to work in a slaughterhouse.

Not that there's anything wrong with those professions- they just weren't for me.

Thanks to the NW Chapter of the Recording Academy (Grammy) though- over 1.000 kids from schools all over the state might have a better chance at discovering the dream they'd like to chase- at least in the music realm.  

They've put together a list of heavy hitters in the industry from Megan Jasper (Sub Pop GM) and our own Brian J. Barr and Hannah Levin to Neil Young's road manager Eric Johnson.  These folks and more will tell the kids about the biz- songwriting, music journalism, putting on a show, hip-hop/turntablism, radio, graphic design, running a record label, and more (perhaps how to score illegal drugs for artists playing your club?) will be covered by the masters.  When these kids are done- they'll be miles ahead of where most of us are now.  Shoot. 

But, windows will always be getting dirty.  I suppose there's somethng to be said for job security.
