Does Not Compute?

One weekend, two restaurants, two vastly different soundtracks:

1. Friday night, pre-DJ, at the Capitol Club, the whole of Ludacris' Release Therapy blasted through the Mediterranean-themed restaurant as my date and I got to work on a bottle of wine. My impression was that the staff could do whatever the hell they wanted, which epitomizes Cap Hill to me and is totally fine, but it was still strange to be chowing on a $13 plate of gnocchi with "Money Maker" in the background. Afterward came Beyonce's B-Day, then JT's new one. I love all that shit, and at the end of the day, preferred it to some of the tracks the DJ played. He started off properly (for the atmosphere) with some Thievery Corporation-style downtempo, but as the night wore on, I could hear a house remix of "Welcome to the Machine" from my perch on the deck. Seriously??

2. Sunday, I spent five hours at Belltown's Black Bottle during a going-away party. When we arrived at 8, they were playing some pretty interesting By Your Side-era Sade remixes, and at the end of the night it was vintage Stevie Wonder. That's all I can remember from the evening, which either means that conversation drowned everything else out, or the restaurant's mood-making skills subversively set the perfect tone. I suspect a little of both.

As I wrote on Voracious after my first visit to Lark, I was struck by how spot-on they were with the soundtrack: Iron & Wine, Neko Case. Heard anything totally perfect or crazily incongruous at a dining establishment lately? Do tell...
