Whalebones Come Home

Whalebones roll back into town tonight, after being on the road with Bkln rockers Oakley Hall. Welcome them home right by heading down to the Croc, or if you can't make it click on over here tomorrow for a photo show courtesy of our own Chris Kornelis.

Turns out the Weekly aren't the only fans of these down and dirrty wailers: an up and coming blog called Pitchfork had this to say:

Whales are big. Whalebones want to sound bigger. A cathedral organ undergirds the Pacific Northwest sextet's "Don't You Know?", making all the guitars and harmonies sound so much larger and louder, easily affecting a stoner grandiosity that many strive for but few achieve. Granted, Whalebones never quite out-Crazy Horse Neil Young (who could?), but they at least sound like their very own Morning Jacket. With its boy-girl harmonies and knockin'-on-heaven's-door lyrics, the song itself has a strong c&w vibe beneath those crunky guitars and flared denim (or maybe it's just "w"), but that's just a prelude to The Jam, in which the song erupts through the blowhole and flies hundreds of feet into the air.
