The 90s Weren't THAT Great

• The mainstreaming of alternative music is one big reason why music in the 90s sucked so bad. The underground music that was being played on college and AM stations shifted to more popular FM formats all set with commercials and annoying DJs. With this move came a watering down of the music talent that was being played by these stations to a much wider audience. Suddenly bands like the Offspring and Live became the major players and face of alternative music. Grunge suffered the same downgrade with bands like Silver Chair and Candlebox. I understand the at any given time/era/ decade argument, but overall the 90s was responsible for a lot more bad music than good. music.

• I think it has to do more with peoples\' own sense of nostalgia than any objective take on music itself. People who were in college getting drunk and laid to, I dunno, the Smashing Pumpkins back in 1993 probably don\'t have the same feelings about, I dunno, Silversun Pickups while they\'re suffering with a shit job and huge mortgage in 2007.

• Goldberg gets exactly what I\'m talking about...it\'s this sugar-coating of the past when it comes to music that\'s disturbing to me. For every decade, there is an abundance of garbage to sort through, mainstream or otherwise. We just need to stop saying things like \"The 90s ruled!\" and \"Music was so much better back in (insert decade)\"

• Yep, what Goldberg said. If you can\'t find it, you\'re just not looking hard enough. That said, I\'m glad I don\'t have to hear Live anymore. That was one ugly baby of a band.

• At any given time/year/decade/era/whatever there is always good music *and* bad music.

• Kauffman\'s right about hip-hop. early 90\'s were about grunge, late 90\'s were about hip-hop. but if we\'re just talking rock, the late 90\'s were abysmal. see: spice girls, backstreet boys, n\'sync (and go easy on sheryl crow & oasis)

• That\'s because the 1990s weren\'t about rock. Hip hop and electronic music were at their most most vital. Who was listening to Ace of Bass and Jewel? There was Massive Attack, Tricky, Bjork, Aphex Twin, Biggie, Snoop Dogg, Missy & Timbaland, not to mention drum and bass/jungle, dub, deep house, trance, progressive house, IDM, ambient...
