Crocodile Closed For Good
I'd love to be wrong about this, but a pretty reliable source has just told me the Crocodile is closed for good. More details will be posted as soon as we have confirmation.
UPDATE: SW clubs editor Aja Pecknold has confirmed that Croc booking agent Eli Anderson received a voicemail from owner Stephanie Dorgan saying the club no longer has the capital to continue. More to come...

Click here for a slideshow of the last show at the Croc, featuring Robin Pecknold, J. Tillman, and David Bazan.

MAN. I hope it\'s not true, but if it is, I am pouring one out for my favorite Seattle venue... This is a pretty big bummer for fans of local music and fun, intimate rock clubs.

This is a travesty! My favorite venue in Seattle...(except for the pole in the middle of the room, but i forgave it for that). :(

NOOO!!!! It can\'t be, just can\'t be. But if it is true, someone must come to it\'s rescue! Who\'s it gonna be? That venue means too much to the Seattle music scene and community to just disappear into the history books. It can\'t happen. Someone step up to the plate and save our beloved Croc.

To be turned into a condo building or upscale yuppie wine bar....Too bad.

What!? I leave town for 5 minutes and everything falls apart. I can\'t imagine a Seattle without the Crocodile. So many memories and so many good times. I hope a good venue snatches up Jim, the best sound man in town! RIP

WTF? Quit listening to the wind and find out for yourselves. The croc\'s website doesn\'t say a thing. i\'m international atm, but if the owners can\'t get up to change their own website they can **** off as a worthy place to spend time. If they are closed, I\'ll bet it\'s because they couldn\'t be assed to fix that dumbass beam sticking up right in the middle of the mainstage. Or it might have been because they hosted bands with too many groupies getting in for free who took any worthwhile spot. But don\'t take my word for it, find out for yourself!

That\'s a major drag -- the Croc was probably my favorite place to see a show in the 5 years I lived in Seattle. Maybe the Hi-Dive in Fremont will become the \"new Croc\"...

This is absolutely horrible.
When I moved here I had to favorite blocks the one with Kincora\'s & The original Cha-Cha and then of course Shorty\'s to the Croc.
I just hope the rest of the block doesn\'t get absorbed by the rest of Belltown too, as many of my favorite destinations are...

@duncan: let\'s see: lights are out, musicians say their gigs have been cancelled, owner says the place is closed; what part of this is confusing you? oh yeah, the website\'s still up.

In a land where everything that gave it character is being torn down and replaced with condos, I\'d hoped at least we\'d hold onto the staples and the Croc was one of them.
Too many great shows to list, so many great memories. Such a huge loss.

This is great news! Getting rid of the pesky \"art scene\" this city has become so renowned for so all the east-siders who get a kick out of \"slumming it\" in this grungy city will have a base to operate out of is an excellent \"final solution.\" There\'s nothing wrong with the Kirklandization of America, kids. It was due to bad accounting, I heard. Not some big, ugly developer muscling them out. But still, it\'ll be a sad day when its a UPS Store.

I have heard that Stephanie\'s husband\'s money enabled the Croc to stay open even after it ceased to be a money maker, but they aren\'t married any more and that may have very well been a factor. (Peter Buck, if you didn\'t know)
Apparently this was in the works even before the marriage ended.

\"bad accounting?\" The IRS or state closed them down? Is Peter Buck\'s wife the owner or *former* owner?
I never liked the place or the employess, but I\'d hate to see another funky old place torn down.

A piece of me just died. Not only is one of my favorite clubs closed, but they couldn\'t even be nice enough to post a notice on their website. It still has a full menu posted and they stopped serving food a month ago. Something\'s fishy...

poor mgmt = leaky roofs , employees who quit , bands not being paid , and finally closure ... hopefully someone will buy it , renovate it and be a careholder of the venue .. otherwise meet everyone over at the Skylark in West Seattle ...

Trust me folks, this doesn\'t have a damn thing to do with condos. The building\'s owner, Howard Close, owns several buildings in the Belltown area and has consistently refused to sell to developers. Let\'s just hope that a way is found to re-open the doors under new ownership.

Peter Buck came in to save the day in 1993/94. Without the ex general manager, Stephanies sister, the club would have crumbled long ago. Stephanie was not very nice. I have been there when the bar was very busy and she sat at the end of the bar clapping her hands screaming at the bar staff \"Lets go people we have a line here\" Nice way to treat \"the help\". It must HAVE been real hard to be a rock stars wife. That reptile has had a long slow death. I am just glad the stench of Stephanie will no longer be around.

Boy. This is sad. I heard that this was in the works, but I chose not to imagine life without the Croc. It\'s true--so many bands have been lured to Ballard and Fremont lately. All we have is fabulous memories of our favorite bands in the Croc. I saw many bands/singers begin their musical careers here and soar to the top. I hope they find a new place to start out so strong. And it\'s true--the sound guy is so talented. He has a rockin\' resume.

thanks for posting that beautiful picture. my fav. croc memories:
1. meeting amazing people at i heart rummage circa 2004
2. do make say think = dual drummers on that little stage!
3. magic numbers covering beyonce\'s \"crazy in love\"
4. the strokes last year
5. the kills- right time, right place, great show
6. bat for lashes this fall
7. cass mccombs - the croc was my favorite room in which to see quieter music/singer-songwriters on the rise. you were always happy to have had that intimate experience before they moved up the venue food chain.
RIP Croc!! i\'m sure your reincarnation will be fierce.

favorite memory: drunkenly accosting Thurston Moore outside the front door, boasting to him that I had a post-up move he couldn\'t stop. His speechless look was priceless (because it was most likely true).

A sad, sad day. The Croc was always the pinnacle for up and coming bands - getting to play there was a badge of honor. Jim the soundman and Kevin the doorman were not only the best in town but great people to boot.
I had the good fortune to play there 10 or 12 times with The Cinematics (1996 - 2001) and saw more incredible shows there than I could list. A tremendous loss to the Seattle music scene.

Good riddance to bad vibes. The Crocodile has been the most routinely nightmarish place to see a band play in recent years. Bad sound (I\'ve seen sound engineers falling asleep even while the artist was experiencing severe sound troubles), stupid staff, and the same small and jaded aging-garage-rocker audience even for major international touring bands who could have drawn hundreds of actual music fans at any other venue in town. Clearly, I\'m not the only one who learned to avoid the Croc like the plague.

@Thankgod: If you were a reptile, you\'d be a Buttasaurus Lick.
The beauty was in its imperfection. The people who went there were just as imperfect and we identified very well with it because of that.
